Are smartphone LCD screens fragile?

Share your horror stories with me.

I'm asking because I've had PDAs since they were available and the same with smartphones and I've never had a cracked screen.
I've scratched a few resistive screens with a plastic membrane over the LCD but a screen-protector prevents that.

Thing is, a couple of weeks ago I was in a car with a mate and he put his HTC Touch 3G in the little coin-dish by the gear-stick. We went around a couple of roundabouts, stopped and started in traffic but nothing that could be considered violent and when he came to get out his screen was cracked.

Anyway, the missus was moaning about wanting a new phone, something she could play games on and check her email, and my mate said I could have the damaged Touch 3G.
I've taken it off him and I've ordered a new screen for it but I'm a little concerned that it might break again.

Anybody know if there's anything especially fragile about the Touch 3G screen or if, in general, you've ever had a screen (on ANY smartphone) crack when you didn't really think it should have happened?

Like I say, I've had heaps of smartphones and never had a problem but now I'm worried my missus is gonna start using it and be disappointed if it breaks again.

It all depends on the glass they use to cover the screen. Most now use gorilla glass which is actually pretty strong but can still break if dropped.

I'm not sure if there is glass on the San Francisco but I was on my bike the other day with full winter gloves and thankfully using my Pulse Mini GPS.
It has an amazingly magic resistive screen that works with gloves on.

My Nokia C7 has been dropped several times and never smashed. Gorrila Glass.
