I bought from O2 but its locked to O2, how would I get it unlocked? I was thinking the wife could say its hers as she's on O2 could she get it unlocked?

You call O2 and ask them to unlock it. Depending how long you've had your contract, they'll do it, and it won't cost you anything.

I think you need to have the phone with the same IMEI number they sold you and still needs to be active on the same phone number, for O2 to do it.

If it's an O2 phone they will charge you £15. You can do it all through the website if I remember correctly.

I got O2 to unlock an iPhone 4 with a different IMEI to the one they sold me (the original was replaced by Apple).

The fee is only charged if you are on Pay as You Go.

I wish Vodafone were so obliging, I've unlocked two second hand iPhones with O2 and they've been very straightforward but Vodafone need the original owner to request an unlock.

I'm now stuck with moving to Vodaofone or selling it to buy another

I didn't say otherwise, but it's better to cover both possibilities than only one of the possibilities.
