Heavily Hyped Bands that went nowhere....
They come around every so often-acts that are heavily
promoted, claimed as the "next big thing", and then vanish back into obscurity. Remember Fischerspooner? I recall them being heavily promoted as the leaders of the "electroclash" scene and people even claiming them as the future of popular music. Well, after their modestly title album " #1 or Best Album Ever" was released, they did some poorly received gigs, and public opinion turned on them. Then there was the Modern (also known as Matinee Club). Their tune "Industry" looked set to be a big hit, with lots of radio and TV airplay. Then "Industry" was disqualified from the charts due to sales irregularities, and they haven't bothered the charts or the music critics since. Can you think of any others? |

One True Voice. Lasted five months before splitting up as I recall.

Primal Scream - as in the first Byrds-like incarnation who were the first C86 band to get a major record deal, hyped to high hell, then flopped. Screamadelica resurrected them
Birdland - I will be shocked if anyone actually remembers this band... Transvision Vamp - Although they did have some chart success, Wendy James said she'd be 'bigger than Madonna'... nope Marion - Hyped as successors to the Smiths and disappeared, but it's a shame since Marion were actually a very good band compared to a lot of terrible Britpop in the late 90s Gay Dad - A terrible band hyped up by the press because a journalist was in it Joe Lean and the Jing Jang Jong - NME hyped them up as the best thing since sliced bread, but nobody cared and they got dropped, then the singer ended up in the Tudors and is now an actor There are probably tons and tons of others given the British music press is so utterly fond of hype and then discarding people like used dish cloths. |

Joe Lean & the Jing Jang Jong were my ones. They were hyped so bad by NME but took forever to release an album. I think they split up before realeasing it after they realised noone cared anymore, and these days looking back, they're a bit of a joke.

I remember Birdland! I saw them at least once supporting labelmates The Primitives. Truly awful.

Oh, I loved Birdland. Picked up their mini Live LP at one of their Astoria gigs, and saw them headline Brixton Academy on the day of the Poll-Tax riots. Mind you, in order to sell enough tickets they had to have Carter USM and Cud supporting.

star hubris ).One Dove-they were promoted heavily in the mid-90s, and they created one good album then split up. Singer Dot Allison made the rather wonderful "Afterglow" album, but then made the mistake of hooking up with talent-free zone Pete Doherty, sending her career into a nosedive.

Pretty much every band Jo Whiley and Zane Lowe mention!
The Vaccines haven't exactly set the world alight since being plugged to death by Radio1 earlier this year. |

Sigue Sigue Sputnik were supposed to be the new Sex Pistols/Frankie Goes To Hollywood

Orlando was a band that was meant to spearhead a revived New Romantic type music genre called Romo.
Hurts look like they going nowhere, recently much hyped as the Next Big Thing
|

Don't know about bands, but I remember a few years ago the industry was shoving 'Little Boots' down our necks it was impossible to get away from her. Is she up to anything these days?

'Mini Viva' whoever that was...was another act of the same year who was being force fed to the public. |

Somewhere, on an old VHS, I've got a clip of Timmy Mallet mocking them for those sort of boasts when he used to be a VJ on music box. He used to do it pretty straight, with very little WACADAY nonsense.

Ok thought of a couple more: The Enemy and The Twang.
Not that I have anything against the West Midlands music scene but both of these were utter, utter toss. Much hyped 80ll0cks.... |

The 411 - pretty talented, had plenty of hype yet they were dropped after "Teardrops" (despite their first two singles being smashes).
