Can someone recommended some current rock/metal with real substance?
Maybe it's just me, but there seem to be a lot of rock/metal bands around at the moment producing decent material, but very little that makes me think "Now that is cool", or that will be worth a listen in a few years time. And there are far too many similar sounding emo with shouty bloke bands around. Mars Volta and 30 Seconds to Mars are excellent, and I'm pretty keen on Billy Talent as well. But I've also bought CDs by bands like Pelican and Keelhaul who tend to get great write ups. And although I like the CDs, I don't feel they are that great, when looking at the benchmarks put down through rock/metal history. Good, but not classic.
I was wondering if there are other guitar fans thinking the same? |

Amplifier.
Huge and heavy, it's almost prog metal (kind of like Tool, I guess, but English) http://www.amplifiertheband.com/ |

Well as you've already mentioned Mars Volta, I shan't post my recommendation for them.
Sparta are quite good. They were the other half of At The Drive-In. |

VELVET REVOLVER!! and no theres no prize for predicting I was gonna name that band. Im not sure what you mean by rock/metal with real substance, as uve named bands like billy talent! if you mean like the classic, GNR, motley crue, led zep, judas priest/acdc substance stylie, then I would name the Darkness, though I know people are now gonna shout out their less possitive views on the Darkness. Shotgun suicide are a new band also that have a real pressence to them! Type their name in google or something to find their website which has music on it! its really worth a listen!

I recently got back into Annihilator again. You should check out their latest album "All For You". It's excellent. You can download a few samples from the official site here

Hi
I'm a female rock lover, so I'll try to recommend some of the stuff I like. It's hard to recommend to others, especially as I've never listened to any of the bands you mention, but I'll try. I don't know if some may be too heavy? Rammstein? All of their albums are excellent in my opinion, including the new one: Reise, Reise. System of a Down? OK, they haven't done much since Toxicity, but they're a great band. Cradle of Filth? Or is that just laughable!? Well, I like little poison dwarf Dani! Killswitch Engage? I go along with SlashNX, too - Velvet Revolver are great. I wish more bands would take heed. My fave personally - Marilyn Manson - but I know that's quite a funny one for a lot of people. That's it, I guess, else I'll go on forever....

Try Mastodon, you won't regret it! Melodic heavy and interesting: is that what you're looking for?
If you like Tomahawk/Mike Patton, try Dillinger Escape Plan's newest album (Miss Machine) Or Cave In (their last two albums especially) Or Converge, for superior shouty stuff (not emo, I might add!) ![]() Lastly, Isis and Cult of Luna do the job much better than Pelican & Kelhaul IMO, give them a try! Hope that helps

I take the point on Billy Talent and substance. I do like them a lot, but more because they know how to write a good song with good riffs. I think I was quickly trying to think who else is around at the moment who I like. I managed to forget Fu Manchu, Scissorfight, Cold, Clutch and Tomahawk.....<note to self : remember to engage brain fully before typing>.
Amplifier - I did hear a track by them and liked it, so I'll check them out. Velvet Revolver - I have the album, and it's fine. Stone Temple Pilots were a much better band. Scott Weiland's vocals are a lot more versatile than VR allow them to be. Annihilator - Maybe, but I didn't really like them the first time around. Rammstein - Thanks for reminding me to buy the new CD! I have Mutter, and it is good (but again, not great). It's not heaviness that puts me off (I used to love Death - technically amazing stuff), just lack of originality. Killswitch Engage - Again fine. But earlier bands did that kind of thing better. Cave In - Yep, very good. Actually I think I'll dig Antenna out and have a listen . Apparently their next album will be heavier again?Dillinger Escape Plan - I'll try to find some tracks to try out. Cheers for all the suggestions. |

From what I've heard it will be, Trepanning is the only track I've heard since Antenna and there's some great sounding screams on it I can totally recommend everything they've released, despite the fact that they've gained/lost lots of fans along the way with their changing directions

I'm waiting for the new Tool album. Maynard has been busy with a perfect circle recently. But the other members of Tool have been working on new material.
Tool must be good Courtney Love called Maynard a media whore all because of those save frances bean t-shirts he made

Check out some Dream Theater material ( http://dreamtheater.net )
Sometimes I also check out online radio stations for any less mainstream bands that capture my attention. http://proggedradio.com is a good start, but then again I would say that since I'm a big Tool/Dream Theater fan, Lol |
