Quasimoron asked me to explain the ingroup and outgroup situation a bit more
groups (e.g. social class, family, football team, friends etc.) which people belonged to are an important source of pride and self-esteem. Groups give us a sense of social identity: a sense of belonging
In order to increase our self-image we enhance the status of the group to which we belong. For example, England is the best country in the world! We can also increase our self-image by discriminating and being prejudice against the out group (the group we don’t belong to). For example, the Americans, French etc. are a bunch of losers! Therefore we divided the world into “them” and “us”
This is the in-group (us) and out-group (them). the in-group will discriminate against the out-group to enhance their self-image the group members of an in-group will seek to find negative aspects of an out-group, thus enhancing their self-image.
this has happened all the way through big brother with the Wolfpack (they were the cool ones to be a member of and so the ingroup) and the Purple Koalas;(harry and Aaron were always seen as the outsiders therefore the outgroup) It was all about status and self image, but also about power and control; the Purple Koalas got that in the end, and the outgroup (PK) became the ingroup; Aaron has kept this power right up until today where and newly formed ingroup came into power (everyone but Aaron) and they are portraying Aaron (the lone outgroup member) as the negative one, looking for every negative trait they can find so raise their self esteem and shoot his down; You can see today they achieved it, but for how long
(again sorry for the psychobabble)
