Karen O, the yeah yeah yeah's amazing vocals.

charlotte from the subways is really nice, met her at the XFM acoustic gig, surprising for a punk artist shes very mild mannered, as are all the subways guys

and if you havent heard of her already Eva Lazarus of Dub Mafia,,, amazing voice and a commanding stage presence

Debbie Harry, Toyah, Siouxsie, Kate Bush. Between 1978 and 1982 they ruled supreme!

Shirley Manson: fearless performer, really enigmatic and intelligent. I like how the rock women don't feel the need to be so whore-ish in order to get the music out there, unlike so many of the current crop of female "musicians" about nowadays.
Karen O as well.

I wouldn't say her success has been limited, she was extremely successful with the first album and the second looks to be going the same way (and egomaniacal?!). Not really seeing any similarities to James Blunt, quite an odd comparison imo. Her vibrato (and her tone in general) has always reminded me of Grace Slick.

Anyway..:

Grace Slick
Janis Joplin
Stevie Nicks
Debbie Harry
Siouxsie Sioux
Karen O
Florence Welch
Patti Smith
One album with a second just released is limited success by anyone's measure. And she has an ego of monumental size, it is clear to those willing to see it. And I stand by my James Blunt comparison, it's odd but true - listen to them one after the other. As for her similarity to the wonderful Grace Slick, I can see what you mean but Grace was much better in her day.

I would never call The Subways a "punk" band. To stereotype slightly, you're far more likely to see people wearing Metallica t-shirts at one of their gigs than a Sex Pistols t-shirt.

Thought of two others not yet mentioned - Bonnie Tyler and Kim Wilde.

Why are people including Kate Bush in this list, though? I adore her but she's not remotely "rock" is she?

Definitely Stevie Nicks in Fleetwood Mac and out....phenomenal lady!
Christine McVie for same reasons....beautiful vocal!

Kate Bush....British Rock/Pop legendary figure....one of the best artists of all time!

Cyndi Lauper! Love her Rock N ROll styles and Dance above her other stuff mroe...i feel she is very sadly overlooked as she has made a handful of corker albums and amazing videos!

Rose Stone from Sly & The Family Stone Funk/Rock band! i think very overlooked lady....very iconic with her platinum wig! and her soulful edgy voice on tracks....just BEYOND!

Annie Lennox...specifically with Eurythmics! very raw deep voice LOVE it!

Nico! Very unique vocal, sometimes criticised for it but its a powerful vocie and again a very iconic lady in music and very influential...if bitterly tragic!

In contemporary Rock...Florence Welch has those vibes of the aforementioned artists! Very against the grain and powerful...and has a antasic future ahead if Lunvs and Ceremonials are anything to go by...instant classics both of them

They are my Women in ROck & Roll...and there are sure to be more ill kick myself later! But phenomenal ladies in music indeed
Sometimes I wonder if we're musical long lost brothers josh.

I LOVE all those rock girls.

Neither is Annie Lennox, or some of the others mentioned here, but I think we can be a bit flexible with definitions. KB sure isn't pop, or soul, or classical. She's in a genre of her own.

So's Björk, though she first came to international fame fronting an alternate rock group.

I think the likes of Stevie Nicks, Janis Joplin, Pat Benatar, Patti Smith and Grace Slick are all great, but my favourite would have to be Linda Ronstadt.

Mhmm I think the only difference lies in where I have a bikini kill obsession and you possibly don't :P

Kathleen Hanna is one of the few rock girls of the 90's that I still love with a passion. (ok, there were men in the band but the band was about feminism in a punk rock vibe and led by tough independant women)
