Reluctantly I would go along with the first bit to a degree. Although the Channel 5 schedule hasn't been as fixed as you suggest for several years, so that part's baloney. But basically in trying to broaden their audience there is no clear target any more due to the increasingly diverse schedule and so on very tough nights like last night where BBC One and ITV1 combined are mopping up an abnormally high percentage of the audience, they lose out.
Thankfully for them, nights like last night are a 3 per year event, if that.
