Wow, I've seen it all over Facebook and advertised on TV alot, I guess maybe it's only advertised on certain channels? Everyone in work is talking about it too.

Radio 5 is certainly running promos for it and there have been some rave reviews in the papers. But as they say the best form of advertising is word of mouth

It's been promoted for several weeks prior to launch. There is absolutely no way you have been watching BBC Television if you haven't seen a trailer.

I can't see Big Fat Gypsy Weddings staying there because there's too many big shows coming up that will knock it out of the Top 20 - unfortunately for Channel 4.

However, there is Big Fat Gypsy Christmas, but I don't see that getting into the Top 20: http://www.channel4.com/info/press/p...ypsy-christmas

I'm blown away by that - over 2m - wow!

No doubt ep 2 will timeshift less because more watched live with no Midsomer. But if it only gets half the timeshift of ep1 then it will still be in the ballpark of 9m!

[EDITED - I initially thought it overnighted to 6.1m not 6.8m so have changed my original post]

No lesser authority than The Times, the nation's paper of record, this morning says the special is set on Christmas Day 1919.

I don't see why the show has to air on the day it's set. I doubt the nation's jam-makers will be penning green ink letters to Peter Fincham or the Daily Mail if it's set on Christmas Day but actually airs on Sunday 11th, 18th, Boxing Day, New Year's Day, Christmas Wednesday....

Then again...

Where do you get 2.7m from?

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/tv/news/...ights-68m.html

It had 6.8m in the overnights - which still means a very high 2m timeshift.

I wouldn't read too much into the additional script order for Pan Am. Sony and ABC have just installed a new head writer and executive producer and it looks to me as if they just want to see what his vision of the show is. (It seems that his script orders have come with very specific orders in regards to changes that should be made).

If you're interested in the general 'creative' process of American television and very specifically Pan Am then this video (apparently created by one of the Pan Am writers) is worth a watch. It is very funny

Panorama's Britain On The Fiddle scores a strong 4.48m against ITV1's 8pm soap hour. I think Emmerdale could be a bit vulnerable in that 8pm slot when Corrie departs back to Wednesdays. 4m+ for Watchdog and now Panorama may encourage BBC1 to make more effort on Thursdays once Corrie moves.

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/tv/news/...almost-1m.html

And BBC1 beats ITV1 in primetime share, even though ITV1 had 90 minutes of soap and BBC1 had 2 hours of Panorama and Crimewatch.

Can't imagine an 89m Downton all set on one day. I expect it will straddle Christmas, with possibly a bit of New Year's Eve thrown in.

Good night for BBC1 then, despite the dull fare on offer. That BBC1 actually beat ITV1 in "peak primetime", let alone "proper primetime", is significant!

Lumley's "Big Flop Greek Odyssey" probably overshadowed by the real odyssey playing out in Greece right now...!

At the rate I understand they're rattling through it, they will probably cover several Christmasses, less alone several days!

DS is wrong. Spurs was the early kickoff on ITV4.

Channel 5 aired the Fulham game.

On CL Matchdays 2 and 3 Sky had both Man U and Man C on the Tuesday.

On both days they made Man C the "main match" on SS2 with the full Jeff Stelling + 3 guests presentation, with Man U low key on SS4 with Ben Shephard + one guest.

In both cases this looked to be the "right decision" as the Man C match on both occasions was the far "bigger" match - ie Man C looked much more meaningful with strong opponent, Man U looked routine.

And guess what? On both occasions Man U on SS4 outrated Man C on SS2!

Now on Matchday 4, ITV has also done the "right thing" and the reward was a very poor rating.

thanks, unfortunately the edit time has ran out

I guess Man U have such a big fan base that it doesn't matter who they're playing, I can't see ITV showing anymore Man City games unless they progress to the quarters

Pretty reasonable night for BBC1. Eastenders did alright by its recent standards, although compared to last year it is continuing the recent trend of significant year-on-year declines. Panorama did very well in the 8pm hour, not sure if benefits are a particularly engrossing topic but it did well none the less. Crimewatch also slightly up on its usual level, maybe that's just me remembering summer levels and comparing to November though.

Poor for the ITV soaps, Corrie and Emmerdale both down significantly year-on-year and on last week. Joanna Lumley did just about OK for a factual, but with a Corrie lead-in it looks poor.

Elsewhere, another excellent performance from Hollyoaks, tonight should be an interesting test to see if it slumps badly like it does normally on a Friday. Very strong ratings from The Big Bang Theory, which has/is being messed around with quite a bit by E4 lately (series starting/stopping/repeating, timeslot change, double bill next week, then not the week after). BBC1 did well to win the primetime shares by over 2% with ITV's 90min soap block on last night.

A query about Downton Abbey:

Matthew Wright and Kevin O'Sullivan were discussing television on The Wright Stuff this morning and they said that they knew some people who were disappointed with the way the story in series 2 of DA has developed. (Graham Norton has also expressed disappointment in series 2). I know such alleged disappointment is not reflected in the ratings. Is it reflected in the audience appreciation figures? Someone quoted an AI of about 90 for one episode but maybe that was at the start of the series before disappointment set in.

I'll wager the AI has seen little change.

Here's Downton Abbey's AIs:

Series 1
Episode 1: 88
Episode 2: 90
Episode 3: 90
Episode 4: 90
Episode 5: 91
Episode 6: 92
Episode 7: 93

Average: 91

Series 2
Episode 1: 92
Episode 2: 90
Episode 3: 91
Episode 4: 92
Episode 5: 92
Episode 6: 91
Episode 7: 91

Average: 91 (with one episode to go)

The AIs this series have been about the same, if not slightly higher than series 1 by 1 decimal place. I'm pretty sure that with an AI average of 91 so far, the current series is the highest AI rated British drama series on a terrestrial channel this year.

The average viewer tends not to be so fussy. Let's face it, there have been any number of programmes throughout the history of TV that have been big ratings hits despite being universally loathed by the critics (and snooty people as well).

Hands up if you're a TV-snob-and-proud-of-it.
