Now that BB is nearly an end, does anyone know what the average for the past 3 months has been compared to last year on Channel 5?

The few good points of BB on C5 is they haven't seem to have exploited the brand - i guess the opted to control it even more so. The thing that i do like is they don't pointlessly end it 10 mins early (as C4 did on occasions) and it finishes near enough to time.

As they struggled for audience members for BOTS this year, doubt it will be back next year. If it is it should be cut down.

Too early to write it off yet in my opinion. This series got off to the worst possible start which affected what followed for two very simple reasons- aired straight after CBB, and Friday launch. Both terrible decisions that can be put right next year. Let's see what happens with CBB in January. If that delivers to the same degree as the last one, they will definitely want to keep the brand. The normal version could be at risk but I still maintain they could build on the numbers next year if they avoid the Olympics.

In the listings magazines today the Daily Star was calling it a resounding success. The Mirror was more realistic, but not overly grim, saying something along the lines of "hadn't captured the public's imagination to the same extent as the celebrity equivalent." In both magazines Friday's live final was Pick of the Day. It was even a highlight in The Sun's Buzz.

Here's how I think the Christmas Day schedules will go:

18:00- Doctor Who
19:00- Strictly Come Dancing
20:00- EastEnders
20:30- The Royal Bodyguard
21:00- EastEnders
21:30- Absolutely Fabulous
22:00- Outnumbered
22:30- Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow

6-8pm the same as the previous two years, should win both hours with c10m and c9m. With no Royle Family, I think EE should be split into 2 episodes, sandwiching the Royal Bodyguard which could start big due to all the publicity it'll get (Sir David Jason etc..). Ab Fab then to follow the 2nd EE, I'd go for Ab Fab for that slot rather than Outnumbered, simply because Outnumbered disappointed in the ratings for its most recent run and I don't think a show which is unable to get 5m+ overnight rating consistently for its regular series episodes deserves that slot. I'd still have Outnumbered on Xmas Day but at 10pm and then followed by McIntyre to finish off the night.

If the BBC go with the above, I think ITV should do the following:

18:00- Emmerdale
19:00- Coronation Street
20:00- Downton Abbey/Poirot
22:00- It'll Be Alright On The Night

6-8pm the same as the previous two years. Solid but beaten by BBC1. Then, rather than having All Star Family Fortunes at 8pm, I'd go straight into the drama right off Corrie. In the last 2 years it made sense airing a gameshow at 8pm as EE ran 8-9pm, but if the BBC split EE into 2, there's no point still having a gameshow there and airing drama from 9pm because it'd still be up against EE (9pm ep). So they might as well air the drama against EE whilst having that Corrie lead-in. At 10pm, I'm not sure what they could have really: maybe It'll Be Alright On The Night which had about 4m when it was on Xmas Day 3 years ago. I dunno what else they could show there which would be cheap and get a decent no. of viewers.

Regarding EastEnders at Xmas
the BBC are planning 2 30mins episodes this year which was mentioned in the Daily Mirror a few weeks back.

Confirmed by the Official website it will air Xmas Eve (Saturday) too

They haven't exploited the brand because nobody is interested enough in it to allow them too. And considering BOTS is the only part of it which has been anywhere near a success I think it'll return next year, and probably in the same slot (though personally I'd stick it at 6.25pm and have streaming from 11pm through to Supercasino, which can begin as late as 1am). And though it may not end 10 minutes early from the few editions I saw earlier on it always began a few minutes late with an extra ad break after the 9pm news update - though to be fair shows in C4's 10pm slot often began as late at 10.04.

I'm still in no doubt financially this is one of the worst moves in C5's history and without a doubt the show should be axed again next year (it'll be the 3rd or 4th time Celeb BB has been axed in a decade!). However considering Richard Desmond thought it was worth going for despite the state it was in the final few years on C4, god knows what will happen.

Of course what the BBC were supposed to have at Christmas (according to Tessa Peake-Jones when she was interviewed earlier this year) was a new Only Fools And Horses to mark the comedy's 30th anniversary.

And without a doubt you conclude this without a shred of evidence and before the next 2 series have even been broadcast.

I think the way forward for BB is when it is restored to its correct slot, the summer, when it is up against whatever LE flop ITV1 have for next summer. I still think 1.5 million people feel the love and these are still decent ratings for a channel a lot of people seem to slag off but never watch( it's quite good). Five have definitely listened to the criticisms, but the timing has been wrong.

Yes, for all we know (because The Sun didn't mention it), the BBC may have said to The Royle Family's producers to do an episode if possible, but they said it was not possible in the time frame.


But...

Suggests Channel 5 are not benefiting from it yet.

Every broadcaster is cutting how much they spend on news.

The Europa League is a curious one as Desmond said the football would stay when he took over Channel 5. But they didn't "lose" it per se if they didn't bid.

I know BB will never get back to its glory days of 7 million viewers, but the celebrity one definitely should keep going as it brought in 2.2 million viewers a night to C5. Also the new CBB starts in 2 months time so I'll be interested to see how this does- possibly with the dark nights and the awful weather I'm going for 2.5 million.
While I don't bother with the civilian BB these days, CBB is usually good for a laugh and the last one was quite good.

I think the loss of Europa League is very telling.

It wasn't that expensive and the fact it's been won by ITV4, which we know only has a small budget, indicates that C5 weren't willing to spend much to keep it.

To my mind, it looks as if C5's strategy is to minimise costs on the basis that its EPG position should be enough to get a 4% to 5% audience share for a cheap and cheerful schedule.

Got to disagree with this. I think had it been another eviction, it would have topped 1.6m-1.7m if Jay and Aaron would have bee involved (the 2 times they were up for eviction garnered over 1.6m). I think that this week there was no momentum as the two HMs up for eviction weren't exactly massive characters, one certainly wasn't (and survived). It was probably the least interesting eviction build up all week. I am surprised it did that well to be honest as this week could only get 1.1-1.3m midweek.

Also the meddling must have put a few people off.

I still think the timing for this series hasn't helped. Come the summer and the alternatives are Wimbledon and next year's answer to Born to Shine and the ratings will be up.

That's a very good rating for Susan Boyle...An Audience with on Christmas night would bring them a reasonable audience, but would it do any better than Family Fortunes considering? BBC One had a medicore night, and Live At The Apollo kis struggling thanks to repeat overload. Big Brother performed ok, but needs an overhaul for next year. Tamara Ecclestone collapsed, and maybe Channel 5 could see it happening as they didn't bother to give it a main show sandwich. Pete versus Life also recorded a very poor figure without the Big Brother support while Autumnwatch seems on the low side, but being up against Coronation Street and Susan Boyle couldn't have helped it.

As for Christmas Day - so the BBC will have to find another comedy; it's not a big deal. They could air a test card for the hour and still find an audience.

Jumping to a lot of conclusions here, aren't we? It's perfectly possible they could be looking to replace the Europa League with something else and that's why they didn't bid.

As for keeping it cheap and cheerful, why commission Big Brother in that case? Why up the programme budget? Why announce two new channels on DTT in the space of a few weeks for launch within 6 months? Doesn't really add up I'm afraid.

Clutching at straws there me thinks - the only way ratings might rise next year is if C5 show it a bit of respect and bring back the live feed - but frankly I think BB was forgiven once for that and won't be forgiven again. I really do think both Celeb BB and the main series will perform worse than their equivalents from this year (I'd predict just under 2m for CBB, and just over 1m for BB) and Big Brother will become yet another show that went to C5 to die - even though it was already dead!

The damage has been done and Endemol only have themselves to blame - they went for short term cash rather than long term prospects as I am certain had they allow the show to rest a few years it would have had a fighting chance of a healthy second run once it had been off screen long enough for people to miss it. BB has returned in numerous countries worldwide this year - and generally speaking the longer it's been off-air, the better received the comeback has been.

And what exactly would that be Dancc - the Champions League, FA Cup/England and all league contracts are pretty much done and dusted for the next few years. And to say not bidding is better than losing is ridiculous - and actually losing the Europa League loses a crucial window to advertise other shows within the schedule to an audience that probably only tunes into C5 for football (now the films and ****ing have gone!)

I agree. There was so much going against this series. With LF, on at summer and with promotion for the main series (they only promoted CBB), it would be at 2m+ average IMO.

Thing is, last weeks average was the highest since Week 1, which showed people were tuning in. It was only this week where the ratings dropped.

A strong night for the soaps, the first Friday since the clock change may have provided a bit of a boost for them. Hollyoaks did particularly well to hold on to the viewers on what is normally its weakest night

Surely Tuesday's figures will be determined by how many watch Monday's. enjoy it and want to stick with it?

Do people not watch IAC or BGT on Tuesdays?

Here's some averages since normal BB began on Channel 5 and the equivalent averages last year:

Since the week beginning 18th September (first full week of BB), Channel 5 has averaged 4.5% until the latest BARB week. In the equivalent weeks last year, C5 averaged 4.7%. So the channel has experienced a year-on-year decline of -5% in that BB period. This decline is more than the y-o-y drops (-3%) which C5 experienced from January to July this year before BB was introduced on the channel. So basically, since normal BB began, C5 has lost more share y-o-y than their first 7 months of the year pre-BB era.

Primetime Shares
2010- 4.9%
2011- 4.4%

Since Friday 9th September (BB launch) to yesterday, C5's primetime share average has been 4.4%. In the equivalent period last year, their average was 4.9%. So there has been a year-on-year decline of -10% in that BB period, despite them bringing in Big Brother at a reported programming cost of almost £400,000 per hour, significantly higher than what they usually pay for most shows. They surely would've hoped BB would boost their share, not contribute to a -10% primetime share?

Since civilian BB started, the 10pm highlights shows have averaged 1.35m. In the equivalent period last year, Channel 5 averaged 1.12m in the 10pm slot. So there has been a rise of +21% vs. last year at 10pm. What needs to be considered though is that a lot of the 10pm programming this time last year were film repeats which must've cost considerably less than an hour of BB. Also although the 10pm slot is up about 20%, as noted previously, the primetime share is down quite sharply - some of this will be due to the effect BB has had in moving other shows around the schedule which have not rated as well as they used to: L&O CI, L&O SVU, Gadget Show (Fri), Sunday movies have all experienced declines as a result of BB taking up certain timeslots which wouldn't have been an issue in the past. In terms of 9pm, I believe BB Fridays slot average are up vs. last year but Sundays have been down.

I don't know, but it's no less credible than the assumption you and mlt11 are jumping to that C5 will air no regular live sport whatsoever beyond May 2012. I did not say not bidding was better than losing, you are completely wrong in saying that. I was making the point that unless they put in a bid, they can't have "lost" can they? They weren't even in the running. They simply decided, for reasons unbeknownst to us at this stage, to part ways with the Europa League.

As for the last bit, what on earth are you going on about? The films have gone- uhh, since when? They're showing Men in Black as I speak, meanwhile there are premieres including Pineapple Express and 21 coming up later this month.

You really do need to get over your hate for C5, it's only a television channel.

Contrast her audience demos with those of BBC1 last night....she may have won in raw numbers terms, but I bet the advertisers would have killed for the viewers on the main opposition channel.
