But it would still only have ads for sofas, heartburn tablets and other ITV programmes, to recoup the cost of this lavish 2 hour drama. There's nothing more for anyone else to sell, and the big brands will have blown their budgets.
It would therefore be something of a loss leader, and I think the big ad agencies would be mightily pee'd off with ITV if they denied some of the country's top brands the chance to get last minute pre-Christmas advertising in to a large and upmarket ABC1 audience.
Getting the ad revenue in is ITV's raison d'etre. Why does TXF climax when it does? Why does IAC air in late November/early December each year?
I'm not actually sure a special of DA would be "the most talked about event" this Christmas. Even the biggest shows have to battle for publicity against all the other treats. Even festive Fools and Horses (including the 2001 return) only ever merited a mention as "highlights", not frenzied press anticipation as "events".

If 12m are watching when 15m watched last year, that sounds like millions switching off to me. You might be right in saying it hasn't grown since August like it did last year, but the net result is still the same - millions fewer viewers.

I have no issue with putting the year-on-year drops into some degree of context (and I would agree with the general philosophy that 20% drops aren’t necessarily the disaster for The X Factor that the might be for 95% of other shows) but the tendency to simply dismiss comparisons with the 2010 run out of hand does irritate me somewhat. That irritation is largely down to the fact that it tends to be dismissed purely because it doesn’t do the show any favours – I can’t help but feel if it was ‘only’ down 5% vs. last year then we wouldn’t be seeing ‘you can’t compare it to 2010’ posts. In fact if we go back to the audition stages I’m fairly sure there were very few, if any, objections raised to comparing year-on-year.
I’ll also say that I agree with the notion that trying to hold The X Factor (and shows like it) to the ‘normal rules’ is a very tricky situation. As I said I think The X Factor is one of a handful of shows on UK television that tends to exist outside of the pack so to speak and as a result it needs to be judged by its own norms and measures. For example obviously everyone knew that at some point The X Factor would stop growing year-on-year but I think the real concern for The X Factor producers and ITV is that rather than plateauing and then slowly diminishing its peaked and dropped sizeably. Obviously though it’s hard to put that into any kind of context until next year’s run – it could be that this level is where the plateau is and it will then proceed to slowly diminish from here but it could just as easily see another 20% drop next year as well (or grow although at this point for various reasons I think that’s unlikely).
I suppose the real issue that’s driving this constant X Factor debate is that it’s all being mounted essentially from one very open to interpretation data point (this year’s run). It is really very hard to work out what’s going on with The X Factor until we see how it performs in 2012 and even then as we’ve seen this year we’re unlikely to get a real indication of how things are going until we get to the live shows. The X Factor a unique beast.
But having said all that I think relatively speaking it’s hard to say that this has been anything other than a very rough year for The X Factor (at least as far as the live shows go) and that its obviously not performing as well as it should be and that simply dismissing a 20% year-on-year drop out of hand doesn’t work. On a related note how is this year’s run comparing with ’09 and ’08 at this point?

having watched that, yes he isnt a good singer, and unlike Jedwood lacks the stage presence. However the shocked tones in which his "rock star" behaviour is reported, when in reality he isnt doing anything most of the shows audience doesnt already do, hes a wannabe rock star simple as, the shock at his behaviour shows just how false X-Factor has become.

12million is a huge figure for terrestial TV these days and OK it's down 2million from last year but it's still doing very well in terms of ratings.
Downtown Abbey did phenominally well up 1million on last week.

I think Amy will do alright. She's a safer choice than Tamara, more likeable. That said, Tamara's at least had a positive critical reaction. The Guardian called it "fabulous television", so I could see her show staying about the same or even increasing this week in a BB finale night sandwich.
Bay Reporter will take the 6.25 slot on Thursday 1st December and Friday 2nd December, giving the struggling OK! TV a few nights off air. (will anyone care?)
Extreme Frontiers looks all set for Mondays at 9pm as the football is on Wednesday. I can't wait to see it, it sounds great. I'm sure they'll go all out on the marketing for it as well.

I Know he probally will but does Cowell really need to come back. ratings have been 9-12m would it really be higher if he returned.

I think these celebrity docusoaps are uninspired TBH, they're just cheap filler to fill the pages of OK!
Extreme Frontiers should do okay especially as the competition on Mondays will be not as strong.

That last stat is pretty worrying considering this was supposed to be a big Auttumn for Channel 5 with a Big Brother, Hotel Inspector and Paul Merton. The viewers just aren't raking in at the moment and it's a worry.

Interesting that ITV has actually risen since last year, but Channel 5 is overall flat compared to last year again. I bet they weren't expecting this sort of data when they picked up Big Brother.

True. I'm not a fan either, and they are commissioning far too many at the moment, but I can see why they went down this road with Big Brother around. As reality TV fly-on-the-walls go, Tamara's is about as good as it gets I'm told, with pretty much all the major critics saying good things about it. I think the problem is more the timing. People don't necessarily want to watch a show about someone who is seen as overly lavish with their cash when people generally are having to tighten their belts once again.

There's also the possibility of Thursdays at 10, which is TBA, but I kind of hope they don't put it there. The last time they ran a packed schedule on Thursdays it didn't exactly work out! And on that very subject, Impossible crops up for the third time in yet another new timeslot- Mondays at 10 past midnight. I think the show's name now refers to keeping up with where it's being shown at.

ITV3 - Foyles War has been good for them on Saturday nights at 9pm this year. In general when ITV1 runs reality, sport or light entertainment, the drama repeats on ITV3 do well as an alternative offering.
ITV4 was running a lot of Bond films in October last year so that might be why they are down y-on-y.

I’m curious about this – why do people think Cowell is going to come back?
He left this year because SyCo don’t want to be as reliant on him to make their formats work and I suspect more importantly because Fox didn’t want him to split his time between the UK and US versions of The X Factor. In the past 12 months nothing has changed. SyCo still want to be less reliant on Cowell as a personality and Fox still won’t want Cowell to split his time between the UK and US versions of the show (which is why Cowell is ‘managing’ the current ‘crisis’ from the US rather than the UK). If there’s going to be a big return next year then it’ll have to be Cheryl (and maybe to a much lesser extent Dannii) and not Cowell. I just can’t see any way they can make Cowell returning to the panel full time work.
Above and beyond all that Cowell needs to protect his image (arguably now more than ever after X Factor US underperforming). If he returns next year and the ratings trend doesn’t reverse itself then his image is at the very least tarnished. 2012 is, I suspect, far too early to be playing the ‘Cowell return’ card. If we see another 20%+ drop in 2012 then we can start talking seriously about Simon Cowell returning I think. And of course 2012 looks like it might be dominated by 'fixing' the US version of the show for Cowell rather than the UK version.

....and since it's been on the HD EPG we've caught a few ITV1 repeats like Whitechapel and DCI Banks we missed first time round.

With the success of panel shows such as Celebrity Juice, it wouldn't be a bad idea for Channel 5 to pilot a couple after CBB to see if there's one that sticks.
US Ratings Sunday November 6
Sunday Night Football easily won the night for NBC (and there will be upward adjustments in the finals).
Elsewhere Once Upon A Time dropped two tenths to a still very healthy 3.7. It was still almost a full point ahead of Desperate Housewives at 9PM though which was itself a full point ahead of Pan Am at 10PM which continues to invite all manner of crashed puns.
Without a national football overruns to boost the schedule CBS had a very rough Sunday night. Amazing Race led the night for them with a 2.6 and both The Good Wife and CSI: Miami were beaten by 60 Minutes which may or may not have held up slightly better because of a tribute to Andy Rooney. Fox did have a national overrun and it didn’t help them a whole lot. The Simpsons had decent enough retention of its Halloween special (although may face downward adjustments in finals) whilst Allen Gregory dropped from its low debut and Family Guy had one of the worst performances I can remember seeing from it in a while.
[Note: there were some overruns in various regions that could see significant final adjustments for CBS]

Sunday Night Football easily won the night for NBC (and there will be upward adjustments in the finals).
Elsewhere Once Upon A Time dropped two tenths to a still very healthy 3.7. It was still almost a full point ahead of Desperate Housewives at 9PM though which was itself a full point ahead of Pan Am at 10PM which continues to invite all manner of crashed puns.
Without a national football overruns to boost the schedule CBS had a very rough Sunday night. Amazing Race led the night for them with a 2.6 and both The Good Wife and CSI: Miami were beaten by 60 Minutes which may or may not have held up slightly better because of a tribute to Andy Rooney. Fox did have a national overrun and it didn’t help them a whole lot. The Simpsons had decent enough retention of its Halloween special (although may face downward adjustments in finals) whilst Allen Gregory dropped from its low debut and Family Guy had one of the worst performances I can remember seeing from it in a while.

Well i know he is going to be there for the final weather or not that means he will be there as a judge is another matter.
Family Guy seems to be hurt by the football more than The Simpsons. Allen Gregory is a goner and I think Miami is on thin ice in terms of whether it is renewed for another season.

the new producer of Pan Am, is going to have to write something very good, or the show will be axed, before its BBC airing.
Brilliant ratings for SCD, TXF & Downton Abbey last night, all 3 shows being above 10m is excellent. When you get above a certain level, comparisons with a freakishly high rating year last year becomes more and more irrelevant.
Even though TXF has had a large drop since last year, it is still in a relatively unique position that even if rates exactly the same as 2011 in 2012 it is still a massive rating way above most other shows, particularly those that attract advertising anyway.
Very low for BBC1 at 9pm last night, the BBC will have been expecting more than that as they usually hold up with about 4m regardless of the competition. They do seem obsessed with stand-up comedy in the last few years what with the endless Live at the Apollo repeats etc.
I'm still in two minds if putting Downton Abbey on Christmas Day is a good idea or not, I'm glad I don't actually have to make the decision!
It's a shame we don't have access to Lord Sugar's ratings document every day. To have access to that I expect you have to subscribe to something at prices only Lord Sugar can afford!
EDIT: Maybe he will tweet one for tonight's ratings as well (for Young Apprentice) so we can see what times the various peaks and troughs are on a weekday.

If memory serves CBS and Fox alternate the national afternoon game so in theory the overrun should alternate as well. CBS did have overruns last night though it just wasn't a national one (looking at the list it was pretty major markets though so there should be some big shifts in the CBS numbers come finals).

He's been told to write 'Desperate Housewives in the sky'. I think Pan Am fans may be better off hoping the show doesn't get a back order. That ABC seemingly haven't learnt any lessons from the recent mistakes of NBC is amazing though.
