They have an article ready for all 4 acts that could return. Someone seems to have pressed go a bit early mind you.

Indeed.

I suppose the irony of the whole situation was that the backup highlights programme of the auditions, that was on for 15 minutes, was far more entertaining than the dross of the actual live shows. Once the first performance of the actual live show was done, I switched off.

Yeah, what a disaster for ITV. Dear me.

Funny how you concentrate on Corrie when EastEnders rated lower than Corrie last night

Again funny how you mention Corrie when EastEnders has a year on year drop 3 times as big

Anyone would think you are a Corrie hater rather than just commenting on the soaps in general...

As 'disastrous' as this is, Merlin is not going to beat The X Factor. Not at all. The X Factor will be down, but beaten by Merlin? No.

Just seen the link. Thanks. I removed by post to avoid confustion. I joked that this could be STV's revenge for getting back at ITV for axing Taggart.

what do you mean, they can not go live? has ITV really had to air filler, whilst X-Factor gets ready to go? what did they air?

Highlights from the auditions stage

The BT Tower will provide the link from Fountain studios to whereever ITV broadcast from thesedays.

There was a cockup a year ago when BBC2's Something for the Weekend went off air on the day of the clocks changing, because the satellite booking was booked in GMT rather than BST (or vica versa). At dead on 11am the programme was replaced by a heavilly branded BT sequence advertising their transmission services with web addresses/phone numbers etc. The clip is probably on Youtube.

They aired pure drivel, no doubt the 1st 15 mins will be 10m, cannot see many TXF fans switching over to Merlin.

Mean household size in 1974 was just under 2.8, making the number of viewers approximately 24 million, assuming the average household size for all UK homes was the same as the average household size for homes watching this programme. (not quite such a high % of homes had TV then of course).

James MacLeod - (Head of Press for ITV broadcasting) Twitter
- The earlier transmission problem was caused by a power failure at BT Tower, and was outside of ITV and the XF producers' control.

.............................................................................................

Personally I can see tonight's show dropping a little tonight. A 10m prediction may prove to be a struggle.

I should know better than this, but I think this series of X-Factor, is to the show, what the Chicago Cubs are to Major League Baseball, CURSED. Is this the "Curse of Cocozza" did anyone in the X-Factor audience do a "Bartman" ?

Of course some on here will claim this is all Cowells doing to generate headlines, and that can only be good for show, but seriously the X-Factor should get itself a new logo.

To think Harry Hill did a joke, where it appeared that BBC 1 was airing on ITV 1, and he said he would be in trouble with ITV 1, talk about timing.

2m for Big Brother was a reasonable finish for the show relatively speaking while The Jury also finished on a steady rating; I wonder how it would've done without being placed in the flopzone? Autumnwatch seems slightly low again but Wild Britain did well. Channel 4 had a decent in unspectacular night; as did BBC One. The main soaps struggled slightly considering we're now into November.

As for tonight - The X Factor can't catch a break this series but the ratings could go either way; boosted as people tuned in after being contacted by friends/family to see what was happening or dented as other broadcasters took advantage. So, whatever the result tomorrow an excuse is in place.

do people actually do that? are their lives that empty?

I guess well done to ITV for having the program ready to go, and its probably the best thing they can do given the circumstance.

Still I dont really know what to say about tonight, even im starting to feel sorry for the show, its one thing after another, and not just the usual made up for the tabloids stuff either.

I would hope that broadcasters of all live events have contingency plans for such calamities.

Remember Robbie's story about Noel presenting from the broom cupboard when his House Party was bomb-scared off? Shame Dermot couldn't cue up that highlights package from such a locale, but if the link was down I suppose he couldn't.

I suspect its best he stay where he is, as far they knew the signal could return at anytime, and he would be needed then in the studio.

Im sure your right about all live against having contingency plans, its just worth giving ITV credit for it. Also it was X-Factor related which is good, better than just throwing on Youve Been Framed (or similar).

ooh to have seen the staff at ITVs reaction as they realised X-Factor hadnt gone to air.

I've just heard about the power cut. Thought I'd better check this thread in case anyone needed the Ratings Thread doctor.

I imagine so. Especially as it's seemingly a show in crisis at the moment.

The problem ITV had is that they wanted to go switch to The X Factor as soon as possible, so they couldn't even run something like Creature Comforts as that'd hold up the schedule 15 minutes even if the show had been ready before then. Even though weak filler, the auditions made sense.

Oh, yes, it'll be his and the bull's fault. I hope he refers to this in next week's show.

I think the best thing about airing auditions, is simply that people tuned in expecting X-Factor, and whilst they may not have got the live show, they got something X-Factor related, and something that can be easily broken into when the main event is ready. ITV was totally right to air the auditions.

I was being slightly tongue-in-cheek there. I just thought the image of Dermot in the Fountain Studios broom cupboard quite appealing, but it's probably just me,

Yes as a self-confessed BBC fanboy I suppose I should be gracious and give credit where it is due, and not take any pleasure in this unfortunate hitch.

[suppresses snigger] No I shouldn't! Imagine if this happened at Strictly !!

A couple of excellent quotes from the Broadcasting forum:

I wonder if they've tried turning it off and on again? The whole BT tower lol

I could have sworn I saw Frankie walking past BT tower today with a pair of pliers and a screwdriver - coincidence? LOL

Has this sort of thing ever happened on TV Before. A broadcaster can't air a Live Program because of a Powercut of something along that nature. I certinaly can't remember this happening before?

But it isn't, is it? It still gets massive ratings (by today's standards) and that's all that ITV care about. Better still, it scores massively with their much-loved 16-34 age group.
