Hollyoaks' renaissance continues then. It's been a remarkable turnaround really considering where we were just 6 months ago. My number of the day would be the 1.41m that sneaked a peek at tonight's Channel 4 episode- seriously impressive. Coupled with its strong demos not far off Emmerdale now amongst 16-34s (ahead if you include C4), the soap looks to be in very good health indeed. Hopefully it can keep the momentum going when the current serial killer storyline reaches its conclusion.
Death in Paradise enjoyed extremely strong retention week-on-week, the BBC's star performer of the night. Obviously it's not been seriously tested yet though, and that will come next week with The Jury. So far so good though as they say, this one could be a keeper. 71 Degrees North meanwhile recovered a bit for its finale, but I doubt it'll be enough to save it. Given the slide from series 1 to series 2 and the very unattractive audience profile despite two presenters you'd expect to be popular with younger viewers, it'd be difficult to make a case for another series I would think.
Good night for Channel 4 with Baby Hospital and Jamie Oliver capitalising on the usual ITV1 horror show. Channel 5 had a poor night, but a bit early to be declaring it the new FlopZone I would suggest. It seems at the moment at least to be one or two specific programme titles that are causing the problem, i.e. Superior Interiors which wasn't the hit expected, and more pertinently CSI: Miami which is experiencing serious decline akin to what we've seen in other markets, perhaps exacerbated by the recent success of Death in Paradise and before that The Body Farm. So a bit different to the ITV1 situation where we've seen new show after new show after new show fail just about. 5 will need to be savvy in the acquisitions market over the next 12 months, that's for sure. They've been surprisingly quiet on that front this year with the exception of Alphas.
