A few bits of C4 programming news:

- Drama 'Top Boy' has been recommissioned for another 4-part series. The first one officially averaged 1.85m (inc +1).
- Nick Hewer has been announced as the new host of Countdown.
- C4 will have a special 30th anniversary 'mash up' night next year: the 8 Out of 10 Cats guys will compete in Countdown, Davina will be a contestant on MPD, Kirstie Allsopp will teach Alan Carr tricks of the property trade, etc.

Don't you have to be fairly cheery to be host Countdown which isn't something I associate with Nick Hewer, the first time someone thinks up a rude word he will give them a look of Death screw his face up and say something pithy. Still its an interesting and bold choice.

Holby did well to hold up above 5m against the England game last night. Death in Paradise also rose significantly week-on-week despite stronger competition indicating that The Jury really dented it last week due to similar audience profile. Hollyoaks back down to 1.1m is not good, E4's showing did well though.

As for the 30th anniversary, I wonder if they could get Pippa Middleton to be guest skyrunner on a Treasure Hunt Special - C4's greatest ever programme.

They could have some fun in the boardroom on the next series....

Not necessarily a bad night for any channel there I don't think. Don't Tell the Bride did very well on BBC3.


I would be surprised if they don't repeat the first ever episode of Brookside in some form either too.

Looks like Jeremy Kyle is at least winning one of his slots at least, providing the respective Monday "Scammed" and Tuesday "Kyle" figures were not much different - meaning that ITV is at least winning some of the morning, just a pity it had to be Jeremy Kyle that was winning the slot...

Think Nick is a great choice, and quite bold, though I never get to watch Countdown anymore, silly job.

Rating of the nihgt has to be DTTB and IACGMOFH. Brilliant multi channel figures.

Scammed had 1.4 on Monday and I am sure once their property shows started at 10am Kyle couldn't compete. BBC alternatives will have considerably better demos too...

ITV should split Corrie on Christmas Day. Why give the BBC an easy ride with slots?

Either way, I see no reason why ITV don't get creative with their schedule.

Does anyone have the ratings for last night's late news on the BBC and ITV?

From what I've read, on XF Final weekend, it looks like ITV will be going with something like:

Sat: 19.00- This is Justin Bieber, 20.00- The X Factor Final, 22.00- Piers Morgan's Life Stories: Peter Andre
Sun: 19.00- Text Santa, 20.00- The X Factor Final Results, 22.00- news/other show

Usually the Sunday XF runs from 7.30-9.30pm but I don't think that'll be possible this year due to BBC keeping SCD in its 7.25pm slot. According to this, there's some kind of 1-hour Text Santa broadcast on 11 December - I don't think it's the kind of thing they'd air at 9.30/10pm so I reckon they'll stick it before the XF final. Not sure what they'd air post-XF: the news wouldn't be a good way to capitalise on that big lead-in but I dunno what else they have to offer that could air there.


Although the BBC alternatives will have a higher ABC1 audience, Jeremy Kyle has got better demos in terms of what advertisers pay for during the daytime: Housewives with Children. It does really well among 16-34s for that time of the day too.

Does anybody have the ratings for This Morning from anytime recently? Weren't their figures down a few months ago, if not BBC One's shows coming close to beating TM?

BBC One's programmes at that time have been beating This Morning comfortably the last few years. The property and antiques shows BBC1 have get around >50% more viewers than This Morning IIRC.

Jason Manford was saying on the radio yesterday that there's currently talks with ITV about there being another series of 'Show Me The Funny'. This is the show which averaged 2.1m (9%) earlier this year in a Monday 9pm slot! According to him, ITV "weren't too fussed" with the ratings as it was up against New Tricks and they're trying to learn from their mistakes of the first series and changing the format. I bet if they do bring it back, it'll still have poor ratings, even with a different format.

I think we can assume there will be no Royle Family now this year, which does cause a problem for the BBC. I think they have more than enough to fill the gap, but not in terms of big hitters you would want in their most important slot of the year.

Much turns on what ITV do with DA. Common sense says Sunday 18th and cash-in big style on the final big ad money of the year, plus a likely 12-13m audience. But if they just want kudos, and to deliver it in "Christmas proper", then they will go for Xmas Day/Boxing Day - and if you're waiving the big money, you might as well go for it on the big day itself.

If it washes up at around 8pm Xmas Day, then I think the Beeb could do ok with SCD and EE to neuter it over 1h40m - and maybe then run Lapland after that (as opposed to Royal Bodyguard or AbFab). At 9pm, that's more difficult - I'd have said run both eps of EE together, but not if they're 40 minuters. I don't think they'd want all of Lapland exposed against 90 remaning mins of DA.

Without DA on Xmas Day at all, I think the Beeb could mitigate the loss of the Royles quite nicely with EE at 8pm, Bodyguard and Lapland, with Macintyre at 10.40pm before the late news.

Just a 4 hour final then? Wasn't it 2x2.5hrs last year (7.30-10pm)?

I hope the Beeb aren't quite so supine this year. They have no reason to be. Stick with the SCD Semi 7-8.15pm, and no repeat filler on the Sunday please...
