According to The Guardian yesterday, the match against Sweden was more or less arranged because ITV are paying for X friendlies a year. The Holland match has been rearranged, to next February, but they would have played a friendly against someone that day even if the Holland match had gone ahead in August, so this Sweden game was arranged to replace that so they could have the prescribed number this season.
I can't remember a time when England have played two friendlies back to back other than just before a tournament, normally they'd just play one and let players go back to their clubs earlier, but clearly both England and Sweden were at a loose end as they'd both already qualified so it was arranged as a fairly last minute thing.

I think the Royal Variety's always been staged on a Monday, because for a couple of years in the seventies the Beeb showed it live on a Monday, around the Nine O'Clock News. I assume it's because Monday is normally the quietest night in a theatre as harldy anyone goes out.

The Queen Mother used to attend a load of them when she was alive, it's still a senior Royal and it's a prestigious show. I remember Princess Margaret used to go to the children's version. Nobody's not going to watch the Royal Variety because it's only Anne.

I dunno, if 'stEnders have a bloody big plot then that'd be a draw, Doctor Who is always good on Christmas Day and Strictly is in the grand tradition of the likes of The Two Ronnies and Paul Daniels, as well as being a useful opponent to Corrie. And I still wonder if Michael McIntyre is going on Christmas Day, no matter how excited the press office got in June. In any case it's more appealing than 2000, which we were discussing the other day.
