Birdy has released a Promo song from her upcoming album.

Thoughts?

Thank you little monster, I thought this track was very beautiful, had a bit of a surprise first, but there is no denying its charm. I am a real ballad lover and this is right up my street. I have been looking forward to Birdy's album. Her voice is lovely.

Does she sing original songs?

She ruined a lovely Bon Iver song and now she's done it to a lovely Fleet Foxes song.
She'd save a fortune in studio costs if she just came round my house and took a massive dump on some of my favourite records of the last few years.

That was my first thought as well!

It's all very nice, but it's another cover, and another cover of a track where I really like the original. As much as I might like her voice etc, it's hard to get that excited about anyone who just seems to sing covers of songs I already know.

I'd like to see if she's capable of anything else.

I think the whole album is covers from what I have read, including a terrible version of James Taylor's - Fire and Rain.

Love it. Really looking forward to this album. Of the songs I've heard so far I have to say her original composition, Without A Word, is arguably the best (only heard it in demo form so far). If she can come up with stuff like that in her future career I'll be more than happy, it is beyond beautiful. Just got to get those GCSEs out of the way first, lol.

Although she does covers, she does them to her own standard. She does them differently to the original. There is only one original written by herself on the album which is amazing.

Ah so she do original stuff then!

Just had a listen to that "Without A Word" track, and yeah it's ok.

Trouble is I personally don't think her versions are that great, I think she chooses very good songs to cover but I don't think any of her versions are improvements on the originals so it's all a bit pointless. If she did more original stuff I might take more notice.

She's only young though, hopefully she'll cut out the covers in the future. If nothing else, her choices of tracks to cover suggests she has great taste in music.

She isn't covering the usual expected tracks which is great. I had never ever heard Skinny Love and Shelter before.

Without a word is absolutley lovely. I cry at it sometimes. I sound like an idiiot but her voice moves me because she stinks of emotion when she sings. She sings Skinny love like she has written it.

Yeah that's what I mean by saying she has great taste in music - she chooses great songs to cover, I just don't think her versions are particularly good, but I'm probably biased because I've always been familiar with and liked the original version before I heard her cover.

"Without a Word" is decent though, only heard it for the first time just now.

Yes, i can understand if you love the originals so much that you will stick by them. It is a shame her album couldn't have more originals but i hope that doesn't stop people buying her records. The likes of SuBo and Michael Buble have made a career of other people's songs.

The one thing I would say she obviously has good taste in her song choices.

And I wouldn't buy their albums either.

Clearly plenty of other people do though, and I'm sure Birdy will do well based on the exposure etc she's had.

I don't reckon Birdy will make a career out of it
For instance, Joss stone did a debut album full of covers and the 4 albums that followed have been all original material. Dionne Bromfield also started out with a covers album and had her follow up with original material.

By album 2, she will establish herself as a songwriter I hope

There were 6 covers on The Beatles' debut album. And they were a lot older than Birdy at the time. Time will tell how she goes when she's writing exclusively her own stuff but, like I say, if Without A Word is anything to go by she'll be fine. I believe I read that this covers album was done due to her schooling commitments? It's very easy to forget just how young she is when listening to her. Her record company clearly believe in her - check out the producers they've hired.

Yeah I think you're right. She initially got all her exposure and attention through the covers on youtube, there's obviously a lot of demand from people who want to hear her versions of those songs, so she'd be mad not to release an album of them to satisfy the demand that's there. It's a great way to get a start in the music industry

It'll be interesting to see what she does next but given that she clearly is writing her own songs, I wouldnt be surprised to see her moving to more of her own songs. Particularly as she gets older and develops/gets more confidence in her own songwriting.

I actually want to hear more of her own stuff, theres been a few times I've found something by her on youtube and been dissappointed it's just another cover.

Don't get me wrong, I think she's a really good singer, but I just don't think any of her covers stand out to the originals. They are alright though I guess. They are alright though I guess
She does have a great taste in music as a lot of other people have said

I am not overly keen on this track in particular but still excited for the album. Hoping for a leak soon.

Her cover of Skinny Love is pretty soulless. I'm not excited about a teenager with a sweet voice covering songs I love.

When she writes an album of original stuff, I'll give it a listen. Until then, she's just a kid with decent taste in music.

I wasn't keen on the Skinny Love cover either, I'm not sure how Terrible Love by The National is goping to sound either.

No-one should touch The National. Matt Berninger's voice is the heart of every song.

I also thought her version of Skinny Love didn't come close to the power of the original. Great song, pointless cover.

I too wonder what she'll do to Terrible Love, and then there's her versions of The Postal Service's "District Sleeps Alone Tonight" and The Naked & Famous's "Young Blood". All brilliant songs, I love the originals, which inevitably means it's hard to see anyone doing a cover as superior to the original unless they add something really exceptional in their interpretations, and so far nothing I've heard of Birdy's covers do that. Her versions are pleasant in inoffensive enough, but just seem pointless.

I disagree. I can't even begin to compare the two, especially when you look at a performance like this...

We've had all this before and it's pointless (and I admit i foolishly got involved ). It's all about opinions at the end of the day, no-one's going to convince anyone to change their minds. People who prefer Birdy's are going to carry on doing so and people who prefer the original aren't going to be swayed either. I think maybe the only thing we can agree on is when Justin gets his royalty cheque he won't be too displeased
