The "3 second rule"
Where you drop a piece of food on the floor/table, then pick it up really quickly and go "3 second rule" then eat it.
Do you do this or know anyone who does it? I find it quite cringe worthy (unless its tightly wrapped in something.)

Table: fine.
Floor: in the bin. The five second rule was busted on Mythbusters by the way! |

Definite 5 second rule is applicable everywhere but outside. It does depend what it is though, if it's like a sticky sweet or something that's come up all hairy (!) then no chance. But applicable to most things!

Indeed, it was made clear that it takes only a fraction of a second for the nasties to make themselves comfortable on your sarnie.

If I had a dog (flat is to small, waiting to move first) I wouldn't let them anywhere near me/us when we are preparing or eating food, as much as I love dogs I hate it when they just stare waiting to get a nibble or any scraps, my mum used to let her dogs do this all the time, couldn't stand it so I just used to go and eat in my room. So I am afraid they would be shut out when food is about, unless its their food of course.
Only thing is that sometimes if it's not suitable for them it's hard to manage to get the brush or hoover out and prevent them from getting it. Like last night when I dropped the chilli flakes from the cupboard and got them all over the kitchen floor....don't think he'd like them for some reason! |

My dog never looks or bothers me when im cooking or eating but as soon as ive finished what im doing she will have a sniff round to see if Ive dropped anything. OT If I drop anything I will still eat it, unless its hairy or looks dirty. except anything runny . Dropped a whole casserole on the floor once really really want to to scoop it all up into another bowl, but never. I would never give anyone food I had dropped on the floor im just talking about myself |

5 second rule in the house (unless the dropped morsel is wet, splattered or obviously contaminated). But we have laminate floors and no indoor pets, so it's easy to keep (visibly) clean. As as I'm a firm believer that a little bit of dirt is good for your immune system (within reason), no issue
0-second rule anywhere else - partly becuase other people apply that, so you might get some looks, and partly because I don't know exactly their cleaning regime |

As others have said, depends on the food. If I can't see the nasties on it then they don't bother me. I DO know that they're there, and funnily enough on a recent food safety course the instructor said drily "there is NO five second rule in professional kitchens". I've just never heard of anyone getting food poisoning from a sandwich dropped on a carpet.

Dropped a whole casserole on the floor once really really want to to scoop it all up into another bowl, but never. I would never give anyone food I had dropped on the floor im just talking about myself The pastry was rapidly put onto a baking sheet, and the meat and gravy scooped up and put back in the pie dish before anyone saw what had happened. Everyone in the house said it was the best steak pie she had ever made. But that was back in the days when common sense applied far more than "researchers" telling you what's good or bad for you, and LONG before common sense went out the window. Added: Not quite sure how much the amount of drink consumed had to do with the verdict on the steak pie! Last edited by Lemonhunny : 02-11-2011 at 16:13. Reason: Add a bit. |

I apply the 5 second rule. Sometimes I'll give it a blow before eating it too

If it's been on the floor I won't touch it.
Some people have mentioned animals in this thread and animals and my food should never mix unless I'm eating the animal. I can't stand it when people have animals around the dinner table and let them eat from their hands and lick their hands etc. I won't even touch an animal without washing my hands after. Then again I don't actually really like animals and never have any desire to touch them. |

Depends on many different variables, company, food type, floor hygiene etc. Generally I am not too fussy at all if indoors but will not eat anything that I have dropped on the floor outdoors (unless it is a sweet which is wrapped in paper or something).
