how good are divx players??
ive noticed a few dvd players that also play divx discs too, what i would like to know is how good are they at playing movies in the divx format that have been downloaded and burned onto a disk. is it that simple to burn onto a cdr and play on the player??? and is the picture good? ive noticed a few in the argos catalogue, ones a goodmans gdvd161divx 5.1 dvd player and the others a philips dvp630 dvd player that plays divx. and no doubt there are more out there. so how good are they?

I own / have owned both the Yamada DVX6100 and DVX6600, and both are excellent at doing the job. I have found that they will happily play anything encoded in DivX, and most XviD formats (although a recent release or two of the XviD encoder have had compatibility problems).
The picture quality is often immaculate, with high bitrate DivX files looking as crisp and clean as DVDs!!! Obviously, low rate encoded videos look a little rough around the edges, but most are still watchable. Compatibility is a bit 'hit and miss' with downloaded material. Most players don't respond well to videos encoded with picture enhancements (QPEL, etc), although compatibility is improving somewhat rapidly with new models. To be honest, I am reluctant to go back to the old style DVD players that only play (S)VCD because I use the AVI / MPEG playback so much now - I can sit down and watch a whole TV series without having to change DVDs every few episodes or navigate awkward menus! |

is there any way of telling when you dowload a divx file if it will play ok on the tv? is there any info that comes with the downloaded file to give any indication whether it will play?
