Where Do People Download Music From?
I have recently signed up to Napster who are boasting 750, 000+ tracks but I am still unable to download a lot of songs that I am after, such as the new Danny Howells track, and Michael Gray, weekend.
Any Suggestions? |

Kazaa Lite is often good for obscurities, but as it is not legal I have switched to iTunes. On Kazaa you can often get dud tracks which are completely blank or playing the same section of music on a loop. iTunes is less comprehensive but better quality. Beatles tracks are a notable absence but bands like U2 and REM are very supportive of it

Is it illegal to remove the DRM from the tracks? |

I dont mind paying for music online, what annoys me, is with all the DRM stuff, firstly its all in wierd formats, so my car stereo (MP3) or home stereo (MP3 again) wont play them.
I also dont like the fact you can only update the DRM 3 times on it. im forever messing around with my PC, so i format it fairly often (every couple of months), because of hardware differences i've got tunes i've legitimately purchased, that i can no longer play, because the DRM has timed out. Once people realise they havn't got the tune forever they will start getting stroppy!!! Also i object to the fact that most of the time you are not getting the same quality of recording, as you get from a CD. 192k is ok for headphones, but put it on a decent stereo and you notice the holes. I for one am sticking to CDs for the time being until these sites give me a real viable alternative [/rant] |

iTunes doesn't have ANY limits on burning or playing - and you can have up to 5 (I think) computer authorized to play purchased music.

I've used mycokemusic.com to download a few albums recently, as they had an offer on a while back where you could buy I think 4,000 credits for £20, meaning most albums worked out at about £4, and singles 50p.
The service is ok, although the files are only 128kb/s Windows Media, which is noticeably not CD quality. For £4 an album I can put up with that, but once my current credit runs out and the albums work out at £6 or more, I might just pay a few quid more and get the albums CD quality from CD-WOW etc. instead. One annoying aspect of this download service is that the DRM protected WMA files can not be played by my Netgear MP101 (wireless digital music player) which is hooked up to my hi-fi. This means I have to download the album, burn it to CD, then rip it back from the CD and encode it as MP3. Luckily, the audio quality doesn't seem to suffer too much by doing this, but still.. it's not ideal! Dan |

I usually download 2 or 3 tracks off an album before I go and buy it, and any obscure tracks that I can't find elsewhere. www.purevolume.com is a good site for legal downloads it you like that sort of music. |

Although I don't use it myself those wanting to risk a few fines tend to be using eMule nowadays, which is emerging as the 'new kazaa'.

Haven't tried eMule. Will check it out.
Kazaa isn't worth bothering with anymore, there's too much crap on there. |

We use Kazaa and Soul Seek.
Trying to get new files with Kazaa can be problematic, as they can sometimes be blank, or just a part of the song looped. But it's good for older stuff. It had a lot of Jackson Browne and John Martyn stuff I was struggling to find the other night. |

Switched form kazaalite to Soulseek a couple months ago, haven't looked back since. Soulseek is great.
And Napster is daylight robbery, costs £7.99 to download an album. What's the point in that, you can get a cd album for that price. |

whenever I tried to use k-lite for music which i own, but am too lazy to rip, its always been messed up versions. normally i get the song for 10seconds then white noise etc. the old RIAA are getting a lot smarter.

I use iTunes Music Store for the odd tracks I want, otherwise it's CD Wow.

I myself use Limewire, and I only really use it for obscure tracks and live recordings. If the BPI come knocking on my door I will show them my receipt for 19 albums from Amazon, dated a few months ago, and politely tell them to bugger off
