Thursday 21st June - BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra

5 Live Baseball with Nat Coombs and Mike Carlson (from London)

Baseball: Interleague
Los Angeles Dodgers @ Oakland Athletics - Ken Korach, Vince Cotroneo and Ray Fosse (commentary from 95.7FM The Game - "The Oakland A's Radio Network")

5LSE covered the whole of this game, with it taking place on the west coast and thus later in the evening. At the end of the programme Nat mentioned that there wouldn't be a live game the next week (although there is a space for 5 Live Baseball provisionally pencilled into the 5LSE website's schedule), which I think is wise given that they'll be going up against a Euro 2012 semi-final. It was also mentioned that they are planning to make up for the nights they've not been on-air by doing some Sunday afternoon commentaries in the next few weeks. They will also be carrying commentary on the All-Star Game on Tuesday 10th July.

with Wimbledon starting today (hurray!) thought I'd mention that a new tv/audio online service has been launched replacing the old Radio Wimbledon. I have fond memories of that station. I remember listening to it at bording school which was in Wimbledon and thus in the limited broadcast area of the transmitters in the early 90s and I've subsiquently tuned in online at times.

the new station however looks good to. presenters include sky sport's Marcus Buckland with commentators including 5live old boys Tony Adamson, Philip Studd, Rob Nofman and Bary Milme of the world service. also they have former radio wimbledon commentators Rupert Bell, Lucy Ahl and the lovely Gigi salmon who I could listen too all day.
with the excellent 5live and 5lsx coverage, radio listeners are well served (bad pun intended) for coverage.

Another FM has started a specific thread about the new Live@Wimbledon radio service that you'll be interested to read Steve.

http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1680809

On there I speculated whether talkSPORT would be taking their updates from that service, as they did with Radio Wimbledon, or would go back to taking reports from the Dave Luddy International agency. Having heard Dave himself providing their first update from Wimbledon in the last half hour, it would seem that talkSPORT have opted for the latter.

thanks Diff-- sorry I missed the specific thread-- I didn't look back far enough. listened to a bit during the first hour of play, sounds ok, lots of court coverage and Mary Rhodes holding it together well.
off now to listen to the Djoko match.

interesting. the first boxing I think TS have covered in commentary form since they covered the sport in the late 90s (as talk radio) and the early part of 2000. if I remember rightly, they dropped the coverage from summer 2001 or so. in reality, given the nature of this fight, I wonder how hard 5live tried to get the rights? not nocking TS there, but the bbc coverage of this fight has been hugely negative so to broadcast it would have looked a bit strange for them. do we know anything about commentators yet?

John Rawling I would assume, unless he's involved with the TV coverage

Does Rawling do the commentaries for Box Nation as that's who is broadcasting the fight on TV?

Rawling is box nations no 1 commentator so I fully expect him to be on there. shame as I think he's a great radio commentator and TS would have won huge points from me for using him. Beakey has covered boxing in the past for them...

It's worth pointing out that John Rawling hasn't appeared on talkSPORT since the 2010 World Cup. Deviating away from the topic in hand but I thought at the time (and more so now) that it was strange decision to call upon someone who had done little for the station and nothing since as their third choice commentator (i.e. not as a lead voice like John Roder was at Euro 2012) at that World Cup when they could have used someone else who is more familiar to the talkSPORT listeners and works hard for the station all year round. Wouldn't have been what I'd have done but then I'm not Moz Dee.

Presuming they don't bring in a commentator with no previous connection to the station as a one-off, I think the leading contenders to call next Saturday's fight are Graham Beecroft, who as you say commentated on a few bouts in the early years of talkSPORT; Dom McGuinness, who has reported on boxing for the station, hosts a boxing show on SportsTonightLive and commentated on a few fights for Nuts TV of all channels; or Andy Clarke, who was a reporter for the station for 11 years and is now a football and boxing commentator for Sky Sports.

I agree with your assessment of the fight Steve, it certainly isn't one I'd dream of paying to watch, it has been treated as somewhat of a freak show in the press and I doubt Radio 5 Live will be too disappointed not to be broadcasting it. What with talkSPORT running devoted cricket, golf and Olympic Games shows this summer, I guess this might be a case of Moz Dee trying out different sports-based themes on the station to see which ones prove popular and receive good feedback from the listeners. Given the varying costs of rights, the necessity of doing transcontinental OBs and the times at which fights take place, I personally doubt that talkSPORT will start covering live fights on a regular basis. But should their coverage receive decent feedback, perhaps the boxing segment Gareth A. Davies currently does for Extra Time may get more prominence on the station.

can't disagree with anything here. . as a big boxing fan who listened to most of the fights TS covered, I'd welcome more coverage on the station. they actually went in for boxing in a reasonably big way at one point, covering regular domestic fights (the kind of thing you now see on Friday and Saturday night fight night on sky) as well as some big fights such as Lennox Lewis world title fights. in fact, in 1999, the covered the 2 Lewis Holyfield fights. they also covered Mike Tyson's first fight in the UK against Julius Frances. Beaky amused me somewhat during the 4 minutes or so the fight lasted by feeling the need to point out that the referee, (who also had the surname frances) wasn't a relation of the fighter winning the prize for most obvious comment of the night in the process. generally, I enjoyed the coverage they provided, although they did have an anoying habit of the summeriser providing in-fight analysis as happens on tv. on 5live, the analysis takes place at the end of a round so you don't miss any of the action.
with the fight not being shown on sky, I wonder if they might bring in a sky commentator for the fight? also, in terms of pundits, Steve Collins has worked for them in the past and I wonder if they'll bring him in.
I'm glad they are covering it-- as you say, its rightly being treated as a freak show but I can't help finding it strangely fascination. one definete listener to TS on July 14th.

Wimbledon men’s doubles final Lindstedt/Tecau v Marray/Nielsen
Live at Wimbledon radio: Marcus Buckland presenting alongside Todd Martin with commentary from Robbie Koenig, Gigi Salmon and Barry Cowan.

Can anybody who has been listening to 5live tell me what the level of their coverage has been? I tuned in during the second set and they were waffling about the grand prix and in the third set they were doing a feature on andy murrey for tomorrow. I know its only doubles but surely with a brit in action, full commentary should have been provided.

Been meaning to come back to this, yes, Beeky did plenty of boxing in his Radio City days, with IIRC John Conteh alongside him

thanks for that. I suspected that was the deal given what i heard when I tuned in. i still think partial commentary is a pretty poor effort for a brit in a final. when Jamie Murrey reached the mixed doubles in 2007, it was a full commentary job. at least they had the last 2 sets in full.

Be fair. It was a big sports day with cricket, racing, f1 qualifying and the Tour de France.

is all of that more important than a brit achieving something that hasn't been achieve for 70 od years? I'm not convinced that it is. also, a lot of the time was taken up running preview for tomorrow's Murrey match, could this not have been done in the build-up to the game tomorrow? its the old argument about live sport v chat.
be fair, i did praise them for covering the last 2 sets in full, just expressed disapointment that more commentary was missed to preview tomorrow's sporting action. it really doesn't matter that much as I think live at wimbledon were much better anyway today with stronger commentary teams for both matches. 5live will come in to its own tomorrow and will be excellent I'm sure.

Andy Clarke has tweeted that he won't be there. If they don't keep it in-house I might have suggested Ian Darke but he is opposed to the fight taking place so that's very unlikely. They used to use Colonel Bob Sheridan of course, but I'd be surprised if he popped up again.
