TMS have sent two commentators out there, Jonathan Agnew and Alison Mitchell, who are being joined by various guest commentators of different nationalities (we've heard Roshan Abeysinghe of Sri Lanka, Prakash Wakankar of India and John Kenny of Ireland so far and Neil Manthorp is scheduled to join them). As for summarisers the only regular there is Vic Marks, he's been joined by various others (presumably some are also working for TV) such as Dirk Nannes, Sunil Gavaskar, Russell Arnold, Ramiz Raja and Alan Lewis.

Fair to say the USP Content team had to tinker with their plans - this time last week the game was scheduled to be the Milwaukee Brewers @ Cincinnati Reds from 5.30pm our time, later in the week the listing was changed to Kansas City Royals @ Detroit Tigers from 6pm (I think that change had more to do with the Reds clinching their division in the week rather than the timings etc) but with the cricket overunning, it was literally only hours before the broadcast that they opted to switch to the As @ Rangers game. This turned out to be a wise decision, what with it starting just after 7pm and the England v West Indies World Twenty20 game ending at about 6.45pm, it meant we got to hear the whole of the game (a pretty decent one with significance in the AL West and Wildcard races at that).

In another bit of good news on the 5 Live Baseball front, they'll be doing a live game on Sunday night, the New York Yankees @ Tampa Bay Rays match-up from 6pm which precedes 5 Live NFL's coverage of the New Orleans Saints @ Green Bay Packers from 9pm. Simon confirmed that Nat and Josh will be hosting that one.

Forgot to post this seven days ago, Nat mentioned on last week's 5 Live Baseball that Simon and Josh would be BBC Radio's World Series commentary team. Presumably that means they'll be doing their own commentary on-site as they did last year, which I thought was excellent.

Baseball: American League
New York Yankees @ Toronto Blue Jays - Jerry Howarth, Mike Wilner and Alan Ashby (commentary from Sportsnet Radio FAN 590 - "the Blue Jays Radio Network")

They'll be no Thursday Night Baseball this week as there's no Major League Baseball due to place on Thursday, but 5LSE will be covering a live game on Wednesday night, which is the final day of the regular season. They'll be covering the Texas Rangers @ Oakland Athletics game from as soon as their yet to be announced Championship football commentary finishes (which shouldn't be too long after first pitch), what with this game being the only one taking place prior to midnight our time which still has playoff implications.

I'm hoping 5LSE's back-to-back coverage of MLB and the NFL continues over at least the next two Sunday nights before they begin doing NFL doubleheaders, it would more than make up for going weeks without baseball during the summer. Next Sunday there are games pencilled in from all four of the MLB Divisional Series, so they should be able to take a game in the 6-9pm slot after the World Twenty20 finals have ended and before their 9pm NFL game. On Sunday 14th October, there are set to be early series matches from both the ALCS and NLCS, so hopefully one of those games with be covered with 5 Live Baseball taking timeslot priority (with 5 Live NFL switching from 9pm to take one of the many 6pm fixtures instead) if necessary. On the 21st, if there is a potential Championship Series decider it will probably take place after midnight and on the 28th they'll be covering Game Four of the World Series after 1am.

just been listening to Radio Sport New Zealand's coverage of the NZ v WI t20 match. anyone know who the commentators are? i presumed that they would use the english language commentary from TMS but they seem to be doing their own. the commentator sounded English though and I also wondered if it was off-tube. the reason for asking is that there was no crowd effects and the commentary sounded like it had a lot of echo behind it. I wondered if the ICC were doing a radio world feed and if it was available online for other matches as I quite enjoyed listening to it as a change from TMS.

5 Live NFL with Darren Fletcher (in London)

American Football: NFL Week Four
New Orleans Saints @ Green Bay Packers - Wayne Larrivee and Larry McCarren (9.25pm GMT commentary provided by 620 WTMJ - "The Packers Radio Network")

Frustratingly, 5 Live Sports Extra left their earlier Major League Baseball commentary to begin 5 Live NFL at about 9.05pm our time with the game at the end of its eighth inning. It was not as if the baseball had been a one-sided contest, as at that stage of the game the New York Yankees (who are battling for the AL East title) had a slender two run lead going into the final inning. And it wasn't as if they left the baseball to go straight to kick-off at Lambeau Field, as instead of continued commentary on the final inning we got to hear a pre-recorded NFL preview with Darren and Neil Reynolds.

To me, this kind of scheduling decision is a joke and it makes it look as if live baseball and its audience are a total afterthought to 5LSE. Don't get me wrong, I expect non-World Series baseball coverage to make way for sporting events of particular British interest (England international cricket matches in the Southern Hemisphere, Andy Murray tennis matches at the Australian or US Open etc) - but not to 20 minutes of build-up to an early season NFL match. I appreciate that a lot of time is put into their NFL pre-records and such like, but IMO live sport should take priority. Had they seen the baseball through to the end, they would not have missed any/much of the Saints @ Packers game so it's not as if carrying on into the 5 Live NFL timeslot would have had a particularly detrimental effect on the live commentary itself.

Had the boot been on the other foot and an earlier NFL game had been overrunning into 5 Live Baseball, I'd have wanted 5LSE to see that through to the end, so I'm sure those members of the 5 Live NFL audience who aren't that into their baseball wouldn't have minded the same courtesy being applied to a late season MLB match with playoff implications. Hopefully if the same situation arises during the playoffs, any clashing baseball commentaries will be afforded better treatment.

Bit of BBC news today with Bob Ballard announcing on twitter that he's been dropped as BBC radio's swimming commentator after 15 years in the role.

Not sure what the next big swimming event is but interesting to see who takes over. The most obvious candidate I can think of is Chris Mitchell who covered swimming at the Paralympics.

That's a shame, Bob has long been an excellent swimming commentator and always made coverage of that sport an enjoyable listen (and I say that not being a huge fan of the sport). I guess choosing not to move up to Salford and opting instead to continue as a London-based newsreader elsewhere may have counted against him. At least he got to go out on a high by covering the swimming at the Olympics, credit to BBC Sport for not cutting ties with him before that.

His successor will almost certainly be Chris Mitchell, who I believe has covered swimming on a number of occasions in recent years when Bob has been otherwise committed. I've not heard much of his work myself but he's meant to be very good.

5 Live Baseball with Nat Coombs (in London) and Josh Chetwynd (in Tucson, Arizona)

Baseball: American League
Texas Rangers @ Oakland Athletics - Ken Korach and Vince Cotroneo (commentary provided by 95.7FM The Game - "The Oakland A's Radio Network")

Radio 5 Live Sports Extra picked up coverage at around 9.40pm our time with the game at the top of the fourth inning straight after their commentary on Nottingham Forest v Blackburn Rovers in the Championship. At the end of the programme, Nat mentioned that there would be "live baseball at the weekend," adding that we'd have to check Facebook and the schedules to see when they'd be next on-air. One would assume they'll be taking whichever playoff game fits best into the Sunday 6-9pm timeslot as per last weekend.

In the United States, ESPN Radio sent their main commentary team of Jon Sciambi and Chris Singleton to the following six games during the last week of the regular season: Cleveland Indians @ Chicago White Sox on Wednesday 26th September, Los Angeles Angels @ Texas Rangers on Friday 28th September, Tampa Bay Rays @ Chicago White Sox on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th September and Boston Red Sox @ New York Yankees on Tuesday 2nd and Wednesday 3rd October. They would have sent Dan Shulman and Orel Hershiser to a New York Yankees-Baltimore Orioles one-game playoff had it been necessary today.

Friday 5th October - BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra

5 Live Baseball with Mike Carlson (in London) and Josh Chetwynd (in Tucson, Arizona)

Baseball: National League Wild Card Playoff
St. Louis Cardinals @ Atlanta Braves - Jim Powell and Don Sutton (commentary provided by WCNN 680 The Fan - "The Atlanta Braves Radio Network")

This commentary caught me surprise - 5LSE carried the earlier of last night's two one-game Wild Card playoffs in full from 9.45pm. It was the first of two MLB commentaries they are planning this week, they'll also be covering Game Two of the ALDS between the Oakland A's @ Detroit Tigers. That game starts at 5pm our time, but they'll be picking up commentary in-running as they did with the A's game on Wednesday at the conclusion of the World Twenty20 Final (so probably from around 6.30pm). The earlier start means that Sunday's live commentary is unlikely to clash with 5 Live NFL.

Baseball: American League Division Series, Game Two
Oakland Athletics @ Detroit Tigers - Dan Dickerson and Jim Price (commentary provided by Talk Radio 1270AM WXYT - "The Detroit Tigers Radio Network")

The World Twenty20 Final in men's cricket finished slightly earlier than expected, meaning 5LSE could join the baseball at around 5.55pm with the game in the top of the third inning. They carried commentary on the rest of the game from that point onwards with no clash with 5 Live NFL.

5 Live NFL with Darren Fletcher (in London)

American Football: NFL Week Five
Denver Broncos @ New England Patriots - Gil Santos and Scott Zolak (commentary provided by 98.5 The Sports Hub - "The New England Patriots Radio Network")

I was wondering what other 5 Live NFL listeners on here - I know Ian F and Shaun are fans - have made of 5LSE's decision to switch from the Westwood One/Dial Global Sports national radio commentaries to those from local radio. Do you like the change or did you prefer things the way they were over the past few years?

This season's change brings 5 Live NFL in line with 5 Live Baseball, which has always used local radio commentaries, although the difference with coverage of that sport is 1) usually there is no national radio option they can take and 2) teams having local TV/radio announcers is such a celebrated part of the game. As someone who has only recently gotten into the sport, are the some of the NFL's local radio broadcasters as deeply connected with their teams and fondly regarded as the likes of Vin Scully of the Dodgers, Bob Uecker of the Brewers and others in MLB?

Good to see you're enjoying the NFL

I prefer the national commentary. Its nice to hear voices you're familiar with and over the last few years we've heard a lot of Kevin Kugler and Mark Malone for example and they seem a good partnership.

I did ask on the Facebook page why the change was made but no answer so far. I guess it's to do with advertising/sponsorship which I see on the MLB page has been causing trouble on that coverage as well.

On your last point I can't give you specifics but I don't see why not. Every team has it's own local TV/radio commentary teams so I'm sure there must be some long standing associations.

Good to read your thoughts Shaun. Must admit I've only listened to bits of 5 Live NFL so far this season, since the MLB Playoffs started I've favoured listening to ESPN Radio's coverage of that through TuneIn rather than their NFL games, but what I have heard of 5LSE's coverage so far this year has been good.

I agree with you on Kevin Kugler and Mark Malone - they are a very good partnership who we got to hear most weeks in the first few years of their coverage, although they mixed it up a bit more last year by taking a number of games covered by different pairings. I'm not sure if the reason to move away from Dial Global Sports would have been down to advertising and sponsorship reasons, my gut feeling is this can't be the case as I know from baseball both ESPN Radio's national broadcasts and the local ones I've heard have a similar amount of in-game commercial "reads" and would imagine it to be similar when it comes to the NFL.

I have a few notes on 5 Live Sports Extra's coverage of other sports - they are doing two nights worth of baseball double headers from the MLB division series tonight and tomorrow; at the moment they are covering the St. Louis Cardinals @ Washington Nationals which will be followed by San Francisco Giants @ Cincinnati Reds at around 9pm; their Thursday coverage will be those two games in the opposite order (providing the latter series, which is pencilled in for the 6pm slot our time, is not decided tonight). I'll post the full details including how they manage any potential clash later on but Mike Carlson is fronting the first game and should be joined by Nat Coombs for the later match-up.

I guess the wealth of midweek games - including the excellent decision to broadcast a very memorable NL Wild Card Playoff on Friday - probably means we won't get a Sunday game, as the New York Jets @ New England Patriots (a good choice IMO) has been pencilled in for 5 Live NFL this Sunday at 9pm which will probably preclude them from doing the second game of the ALDS (which American TV broadcaster TBS will probably schedule in the afternoon US time, what with Fox not wanting their NLCS opener to clash with their afternoon NFL coverage). But then even as a baseball fan, I don't so much mind that scheduling if they make up for losing an earlier Championship Series match in one of 5 Live Baseball's "usual" slots by gaining a number of potentially decisive midweek games from both the DS and CS rounds to make up for this.

Also, on Monday 5LSE were planning to do commentary on Swindon Robins v Poole Pirates in speedway's Elite League Grand Final First Leg - Darren Fletcher and Jan Staechmann were in situ to commentate - before that was rained off. I think they are planning to do commentary on both the rescheduled first leg and the second leg which is good news.

I'm pleased to see 5LSE covering speedway, I've enjoyed what I've heard of BBC Local Radio's coverage of the sport - in the West Midlands, both BBC WM and BBC Coventry & Warwickshire's coverage of their local teams is strong and I know BBC Radio Oxford's coverage was Sony nominated a few years ago - but what with a networked evening programme being rolled out across BBC Local Radio in 2013, future coverage of that sport may come under threat.

I'm hoping that if 5LSE's Elite League Grand Final coverage receives a favourable reception, we'll see it get the same kind of treatment county cricket coverage has (IMO very successfully) been given, with local radio coverage of the sport carried on 5LSE on occasions when that platform would be otherwise unused. It would be a good way to justify the costs of continuing to cover that sport by bringing it to a wider audience.

All in all, 5LSE is in rude health at the moment - aside from the usual diet of football, international cricket and rugby (both codes), their first summer of regular county cricket coverage has been superb, they did a great job of covering the Paralympics and their NFL and MLB coverage is getting more and more comprehensive by the year. The speedway finals is a good addition to the schedule and I note from the station's off-air trailers there is mentions of basketball coming up this month (NBA, BBL or both I wonder?). It's a station that richly deserves its recent RAJAR success as it continues to go from strength to strength.

5 Live Baseball with Mike Carlson, joined by Nat Coombs for the second game (both in London)

Baseball: National League Division Series, Game Three
St. Louis Cardinals @ Washington Nationals - Charlie Slowes and Dave Jageler (commentary provided by 106.7 The Fan - "The Nationals Baseball Network")

Baseball: National League Division Series, Game Four
San Francisco Giants @ Cincinnati Reds - Marty Brennaman, Thom Brennaman and Jeff Brantley (commentary provided by WLW 700AM - "The Cincinnati Bell Reds Radio Network")

Marty and Thom Brennaman are a father and son combination, Marty being the long-serving Reds radio voice with Thom primarily being the play-by-play man on the Reds' local television coverage on Fox Sports Ohio during the regular season. Thom also commentates on MLB and NFL games for Fox television nationally. They didn't actually commentate together, instead the coverage switched between the pair working in two inning stints alongside Jeff Brantley who covered the whole game.

5LSE joined the Giants @ Reds game in the bottom of the second inning as the earlier Cards @ Nats game overran, although Mike provided spells of off-tube commentary on the later game during the breaks/changes in innings in the earlier one. For the record, Nat took up the hosting role with Mike switching from presenter to pundit for the second game. It'll be Nat and Josh Chetwynd in the chairs tonight.
