5 Live Baseball with Nat Coombs (in London) and Josh Chetwynd (in Tucson, Arizona)

Baseball: American League
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim @ Tampa Bay Rays - Dave Wills and Andy Freed (commentary provided by WDAE 620AM - "The Rays Radio Network")

Wills and Freed switched between play-by-play and colour commentary roles every two innings. 5LSE had planned to join the game in-running at 6.30pm our time due to their county cricket coverage, but with the day's play at Taunton ending early they were able to pick up the game at first pitch. Next Thursday, Simon Brotherton will be presenting 5 Live Baseball alongside JC for coverage of the Miami Marlins @ San Francisco Giants game at the later time of 9.15pm.

Later tonight, 5LSE will be broadcasting a 5 Live NFL special from Radio City Music Hall in New York, where Darren Fletcher and Greg Brady will be commentating on the 2012 NFL Draft. Coverage is due to begin at midnight our time.

Saturday 28th April - Newstalk 106-108FM

Ger Gilroy presented Newstalk Sport Saturday alongside Joe Molloy

Rugby Union: Heineken Cup Semi-Final
Ulster v Edinburgh - Dave McIntyre, Keith Wood and Liam Toland (5.45pm commentary), with Simon Hick at pitchside

On Newstalk Sport Sunday the following day, Ger and Joe updated listeners on the Clermont Auvergne v Leinster Heineken Cup Semi-Final from their studio monitors. They didn't have a reporter in France, although I assume this was due to cost reasons rather than a reporting access issue.

With both stations having shared rights to the Heineken Cup and both doing commentary on a semi-final each this weekend, will both Newstalk and RTE Radio be providing a commentary on the Heineken Cup Final next month?

Howells is reporting for Radio 5 Live, which I believe he'll be doing for the full four days. Read is BBC Radio Manchester and Lancashire's correspondent while covering the game for BBC WM and BBC Coventry & Warwickshire are Eakin (Thursday), Wilford (Friday), Taylor (Saturday and Sunday) and summariser Britt (all four days).”

Turns out Phil was only there for the first two days before going back to Birmingham. I believe only Taylor, Read and Howells handled the weekend's play from Liverpool, with Saturday's play and much of Sunday's only going out on the BBC Sport website with Radio 5 Live Sports Extra committed elsewhere.

As I understand it, talkSPORT will broadcast live AM, digital and online commentary of the SECOND Premiership Rugby Semi Final on Saturday 12th May (17:30 kick-off).

I'm not sure how they'll cover the first game as they're broadcasting Matchday Live: The Story of the Season with Sam Matterface, Stan Collymore, Alvin Martin and Ray Houghton between 12:00-17:00. I would imagine it'll be an online-only commentary.

Georgie Bingham presents Full Contact: Premiership Live between 17:00-20:00 that evening.

I've gotta admit - slightly disappointing to see they're not doing both games on AM. Do they really need to have FIVE hours of football talk?

I agree - while I think having a Premier League review/final day preview show on that Saturday is a good idea, I'd have limited it to 12noon-2pm with coverage of both Premiership semi-finals starting at 2pm.

5 Live Baseball with Simon Brotherton (in London) and Josh Chetwynd (in Tucson, Arizona)

Baseball: National League
Miami Marlins @ San Francisco Giants - Jon Miller and Dave Flemming (commentary provided by KNBR - "The San Francisco Giants Radio Network")

5LSE picked up the game towards the end of a lengthy top of the first inning, joining it just before 9pm after their coverage of an Olympic water polo testing event had concluded. Like the radio announcers from last week, Jon and Dave are switching between the play-by-play and colour roles every two innings.

A lot of love from "the board bangers" for Jon Miller, who of course was the voice of ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball during the years when Channel 5 used to take it. Nice to hear a classy commentator like Simon Brotherton sharing some warm words for another. I very much agree with his sentiments, Miller is a joy to listen to.

Cricket: County Championship Division One
Somerset v Lancashire - Kevin Howells, Charles Dagnall, Pete Simson, Scott Read, Vic Marks and Iain O'Brien (commentary)

Charles Dagnall is a former county cricketer who regularly presents BBC Radio Leicester's sports coverage. He was involved in their commentary throughout the four days including anchoring the weekend coverage in the absence of 5 Live's Howells. Scott Read covered the three days of play we had (Sunday was washed out) for BBC Radio Lancashire, while Simson (just the Friday) and Marks (all four days) were there for BBC Somerset. O'Brien was involved on the Saturday and Sunday.

Wednesday 2nd to Saturday 5th May

Cricket: County Championship Division One
Lancashire v Nottinghamshire - Kevin Howells, Scott Read and Dave Bracegirdle (commentary)
Warwickshire v Durham - Clive Eakin, Dan Wheeler and Phil Britt (commentary)

5LSE carried two different commentaries this week, cutting between the two matches with the weather often dictating where they were. Their coverage was based at Old Trafford, anchored by Radio 5 Live's Howells who has been joined by Read of BBC Radio Lancashire and Bracegirdle from BBC Radio Nottingham throughout the game. There was no Durham representative at Edgbaston, with their team of Eakin (Wednesday and Friday), Wheeler (Thursday) and Britt (all three days) covering the game for BBC Coventry & Warwickshire and BBC WM. Both four day games began on Wednesday with the Warwickshire v Durham game ending a day early. There is no cricket coverage on 5LSE today with various other sporting events taking priority.

Forthcoming cricket on 5LSE includes coverage of Nottinghamshire v Middlesex from Wednesday and England Lions v West Indies from Thursday.

Former Saracens, England and British Lions flanker Richard Hill will also be part of talkSPORT's coverage this weekend.

There's still no word on commentators yet for either game but it wouldn't surprise me if two of the following are used:

Andrew McKenna
John Taylor
Rupert Bell
Russell Hargreaves

...depending on their availability.

This was also the commentary team for 5 Live Sports Extra on Friday 11th May and the quartet are also working on final day coverage on the stream available on the BBC Sport website (5LSE has various other commitments today preventing them from taking any of Saturday's play). Since Thursday, Steve May has been reporting into their coverage on the England Lions v West Indies game from Northampton.

This week's County Championship Division One commentary has had a slightly different set-up to previous ones - Kevin Howells and Iain O'Brien have been doing bits of presentation and short spells of commentary to open and close each session/period on-air specifically for 5LSE either side of opting into the BBC Sport website commentary which has been lead by Dave Bracegirdle and Kevin Hand. Howells and May are also reporting for BBC Radio 5 Live, Bracegirdle is there for BBC Radio Nottingham while Hand and O'Brien are covering the game for BBC London.
