Tortoise - need advice, he is eating wood

Our tortoise is about 2 years old. We got him from a pet shop last week. He came with everything he needs, but today we have seen him eating some of the wood chips. He ate a few of them!
My other concern is that he likes to climb into his water dish, but sometimes get stuck half way and i'm worried that if were out for the day he may fall onto his back or just get stuck on the side of the dish all day.

I can't help with the wood eating, though you could try the Shelled Warriors forums & website they give very good advice on all types of tortoises and their issues.

As to the climbing and falling on their backs, yep they do that a lot (or at least ours does). We've had him for over 30 years and are forever turning him back the right way up, but I have to say that we've never come home and found him stuck on his back so I can only assume he rights himself. He's a bit of an escape artist, so his shell has a few scuffs from his adventures in getting stuck and falling over but he's never actually hurt himself.

Is your tortoise in a vivarium?

We have 2 Hermans that were in a viv when they were younger, they used to eat the gravel so we had to take it out, I don't think they really care what is underfoot so we just used newspaper, do they have a cuttlefish to bite on?

Mine also turn over they do seem to right themselves fairly easily by rocking from side to side, I check them a few times a day so they would never be stuck long enough to do any harm.

i was going to suggest swapping him to newspaper or reptile carpet to basically remove the problem, i'm not sure you'd be able to prevent him eating it any other way

granted it won't look as attractive

they are a fair bit better at righting themselves than people think, but maybe a more shallow water bowl would remove the issue of him getting stuck on the rim if it's a regular occurrence?

obviously i'm not sure what type of bowl you have so forgive me if you already have a shallow bowl

Thanks for the replies. He is in a table. I basically used what the shop gave me. the water dish is a critter bowl. it is fairly shallow, but I will look for a different one - we weren't sure how much he is drinking, so today tipped some water onto the table and he went to it and drank it straight away, so I think he might not be getting enough water. I didn't realise they climbed so much, and fell,he is far more interesting than I expected.
