Hey guys

Jude looking for some quick advice really, my HTC desire keeps coming up with the notification 'Low on storage space'. I don't really have many apps installed on the phone (maybe 5?) And I've transferred everything it will let me over to the SD card but this message still keeps coming up with no way of clearing it.

Does anyone have any advice on how I can try and get rid of it.

Cheers!

It's not apps (unless you have thousands of the things) but data that chews up space. Stuff like photos, music and video files. Those are the things you should be looking at to free up space.

You could connect the Desire to your PC/Laptop and move stuff off the phone onto the hard drive of the computer if you have stuff on the phone that you cannot bear to delete for ever.

I could be wrong but I think the Desire looks at all the storage space both internal memory and SD card that the phone has access to. I'm pretty sure that is how my Desire displays it anyway. So moving stuff from internal memory to SD card isn't going to alter anything.

You either have to prune all the junk, transfer it off the phone to another location or use a bigger SD card, (copying the contents of the existing one to the new one obviously), or some combination of all three.

Just checked, the SD card has 1.5 gb free space avnd the internal phone has just 8mb. Yet the message is still there.

If you only have 5 apps installed, they are either huge apps, or some of the "stock" apps are taking up too much space in their cache. Try a "cache cleaner" and a "history cleaner" from the market. Many apps have bloated caches which can be safely removed.

Another thing that will clear space is to delete the "data" from the official Facebook app (if you have it installed). This removes a huge chunk of data from mine. You will have to log back into the app afterwards, but it will do not harm.

If you go into "menu button/setting/applications/manage applications" - select the "all" tab at the top and then "menu button/sort by size", this will give you an idea of the largest space-hogging apps.

You might also want to go into the browser settings and clear the history and cache.

Go into the big ones and see if they can be moved to the SD card, if not, clear their cache. But don't delete the data (Facebook app is safe to do so though).

I use Apps2SD - not only does it alert me when a new app can be moved to the SD, but it also prompts to clear the total cache files when they get above a certain size.

Facebook and Internet are the two that really take up a lot of (unnecessary) space. Delete the cache on both.

Settings>Applications>Manage applications>(press menu)Sort by size. Select each one and clear cache. It will also show what other applications are using space and if you can delete their cache too.

Ahh fantastic that's fixed it. Facebook especially had more space taken by data/cache that the app itself. Thanks both for the great advice!

You will never escape from this problem!
Root your phone and install a different ROM (well, eventually you will be forced to).

Glad to help - get Apps2SD, even if it is just for the cache cleaner

I use the AlphaRev partition table which takes part of the memory reserved for over the air updates and uses it for apps. Together with Cyanogenmod 7 it works like a dream and I can install lots more apps without errors.
