Unethical foods?
Do you ever/have you ever eaten unethical foods? Fois gras, veal, sharks fin, caviare etc...?
To me these 'taboo' foods are no more unethical then a battery farmed hen. Where do you draw the line? |

Not all veal is from unethical sources, so if you do a bit of research into your supplier before buying you can avoid the issue.
I only eat free-range or game birds so don't order chicken or duck from takeaways. Only buy fair trade coffee but it isn't always made clear in cafes/restaurants. Only buy free-range eggs, but again you don't always know what you're getting when you eat out. I am sounding like a PC-foodie goody-two-shoes so I shall now expose myself as a gigantic hypocrite.............. I love foie gras. It is heaven on a plate, truly one of the most divine things I have ever eaten. I could offer a pathetic excuse about only eating it a few times a year in restaurants, and I could say I try to eat ethically in all other cases, but it is still morally unacceptable. The beauty of the taste, however, wins out over the morals in this one case. In fact in Spain I once attended a special foie gras 'theme meal', where all seven courses included foie cooked in different styles, including the pudding! I will obviously be going to hell but that's where all the interesting people go anyway. |

aside from usual stuff like how meat and fish are 'produced', lots of veggies are grown on farms with slave labour (even in this country) and often involve transporting large distances making them very ungreen.

You just know Belzebub has a special room for you all lined up - containing a giant goose, a force feeding cone and a humungous pile of corn

All our veg is bought from the farm shop down the lane from where we live, and brought home in a cycle trailer..
Unfortunately (without wanting to open a can of worms) we buy our chicken from a supermarket, so it is probably halal.

I doubt many people on here eat much sharks fin soup. It's ridiculously expensive.
