Cher beating Janet in 'marmite' battle for YouTube views
devlinacious
03-11-2011
This week Cher came back on the show with her new single With UR Love. Janet sang her Halloween song, Every Breath You Take.

Both girls tend to split opinion but despite Janet's self-admitted poor performance she is still close to Cher's viewing figures on the official xfactoruk YouTube channel.

Cher 03/11/2011 (today)
1,939 likes, 1,553 dislikes

Janet 02/11/2011 (yesterday)
1,904 likes, 898 dislikes

Little Mix came a close third with 206,740 views (yesterday) and, following their best performance to date, had very few dislikes. Everyone else was way behind at the time the figures were recorded.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Janet's and Little Mix's figures are from yesterday and Cher's are from today. I did this to be fair on Cher due to the fact that her video was released a day later.

Another victory for Queen Cher. You say it like it's news.

The Cher would wipe the floor with these two.

You don't think it's news that Janet, on her worst ever week, beats Little Mix on their best week?

Incidentally the bottom four acts all have less than half Janet's viewing figures.

At least my thread is based on hard figures and not the usual interminable arguments based purely on personal opinion.

I don't think it's accurate to label Janet as "marmite" just yet. Every single one of her videos up until this last one has received rave reviews. Her performances consistantly have the highest number of views and her ratio of likes to total ratings, except for this last performance, has always been at or near the top.

One data point doesn't make a trend. I'll be interested to see if her ratings rebound after this week's performance. If she continues to lead or be near the top in total views and total likes with a "% Like" (likes/total ratings x 100) of 75% or less then the marmite label might start to stick.

Of course. I'm just not surprised. Janet has more star potential in the her skin follicles than Little Mix have combined.

the only relevance of that comment is the same name. Keep it topical in future, we're music fans not archaeologists

Youtube views mean NOTHING, so Janet getting more views than Little Mix on their best week means nothing.

What's more telling is the number of likes/dislikes. Little Mix have a good 600 more likes & about 800 less dislikes than Janet.

1. Point taken. I meant to refer just to this one performance, not all of them
2. Interesting measurement. Have you actually used this anywhere and does it show any predictive power?

I was about to make this exact point. Youtube don't count for s*** if people are disliking it, for instance Rebecca Black's Friday had like 130m views, it doesn't mean it was liked...

I disagree for various reasons, for example Justin Bieber has massive dislikes but he also has enormous views and is one of the most popular artists ever. If you think you can do it better, feel free. At least I made the effort.

Cher and Janet oh Lord!!

Wouldn't want to be trapped in a room with both of them singing.

Hopefully I won't have to endure any more of Janet after this weekend and the public do the right thing!!

There is already a thread on the subject of being trapped in a lift with the contestants. However, as you are a nobody I don't imagine you would ever find yourself in that situation.

Only in week 4. Every other week Little Mix hasn't even come close to Janet. Dislikes are far less meaningful than likes or views. Using an analogy to voting, first, there has to be enough interest for someone to pay attention to you (views). Then, that interest has to be positive enough for them to vote (likes). It doesn't matter how many dislike your performance as long as enough of them like it. A good case in point is Frankie. He always leads in dislikes, but enough people like him that he's been able to stick around so far (but I think his time will soon run out).

It will be interesting to see if Janet rebounds this coming week.

I have been tracking this and there is a fairly good correlation so far but it is not perfect.

Week 2: Nu Vibe was 12th out of 12 in views and likes; Frankie was 8th in views and 11th in likes.

Week 3: Sami was 11th out of 11 in views and likes and Kitty was 9th in both.

Week 4: Sophie was 6th out of 10 in views and likes while Misha was 4th in views and 5th in likes. (BTW, Sophie was 9th in views and 8th in likes on the longer version of the video while Misha was 3rd in views and 6th in likes.)

So while it isn't perfect, it is pretty clear that you are better off being toward the top than toward the bottom.
