have you ever liked the noise a group makes until the singer comes in

and thought you'd have been a fan if only they'd got rid of the bloke on the mike. I always felt that way about The Cure, who had decent songs all ruined by Smith's whining. And the Stone Roses could have been ok with better vocals too

Not a ''band'' as such, but I always wonder what some Bob Dylan songs would sound like with a better singer.

But his vocals do suit a lot of his songs. I couldn't imagine Like A Rolling Stone without his snarl.

Try The Byrds, they have recorded lots of his songs.

I agree. I love his songs when covered by other artists, most notably Jimi Hendrix's version of All Along the Watchtower and the Neville Brothers God On Our Side. I find Dylan very difficult to listen to but can't deny what a brilliant songwriter he is.

I have, and some of them are quite good.

Agreed. Adele certainly knew what she was doing when she when she covered Make You Feel My Love.

I believe the same goes for Leonard Cohen too.

how many people would bet she thought she was covering billy joel though? i doubt few people listened to dylans album, heard the original and thought it would be a great tune to cover, but in the same way as hallelujah, jeff buckely covered it (in the style of john cale's cover version), and the x factor thinks they should murder it on their shows

Later Pogues recordings, before Shane called it a day, long after he should have done. They aren't comfortable listening.

Edit: also, live recordings of Lou Reed doing Velvets songs which were originally sung by Nico. Shouty and crap, although I like a lot of Lou's solo material.

I love the Sugbabes but when Heidi sings, i go to sleep on her bits. Her voice just doesn't blend it with the other three girls (even when it was Sugababes 2.0 and 3.0). She isn't vocally gifted. It's no wonder she has sung the least throughout the Sugababes history.

I actually hated the first incarnation of Sugababes and thought they were a LOT better once Heidi joined. Now that Jade and Amelle have replaced Keisha and Mutya we finally have a band where all three can actually sing live, IMO.

I saw one of their Christmas shows in Dublin last year. He fell of his chair (twice), was completely smashed, got sick off the stage and eventually gave up until the last two songs for which he mumbled his way through incompetently. It was, to be quite honest, worse than any other performance I had ever seen, which was shocking as he was AWESOME the year before. I think it's a sad state of affairs for The Pogues when I enjoyed Britney's latest tour more.

I disagree, Robert Smith does not have a whining voice he has a nice unique voice.

I don't particularly like Amelle from the Sugababes' voice, especially when she was in the line up with Keisha and Heidi ( whose voices I did like).

Also, The B-52's - the girls are AMAZING vocalists and then Fred comes in with his pseudo chatting rapping talking - whatever it is - and ruins a perfectly good song. Proof is that their best tunes - Roam, Dirty Back Road, Summer of Love, etc, etc are the ones where he doesn't contribute.

Chris Cornell is a technically very good singer, and I liked some of Audioslave's first album, but their version of Killing in the Name is horrible.

Don't have time for audioslave, will always have a lot of love for chris cornell due to Rusty cage alone, what a song!

A group not so much ruined by the singers voice but by the singers attitude. Guns n Roses. He destroyed them

Duran Duran would be a good band - a great band - were it not for Simon Le Bon.

The Cure are one of my favourite bands and Robert's voice and song-writing ability are essential to that. He writes the perfect songs for his vocal range.

New Order are one of my favourite bands. Bernard's vocals (singing would maybe be the wrong word) were an impiortant part of creating a sound distinctive from Joy Division. Much better that they did that than bring in a new singer or have Hooky do it Ian Curtis style (as he does on The Light's live cover version of Unknown Pleasures & other songs).
