Yep, deleting programmes on the HDR is a pain. Quite why it needs so many button presses and takes so long is beyond me. I put up it though as I consider it a smallish price to pay for not giving News Corp. £40.00 or so every month.
The hard drive you mentioned has a running speed of 5400RPM.
When I upgraded my Foxsat's hard drive to the WD10EVDS model (which not only has a bigger cache memory but also has a running speed of 7200RPM) I noticed the time to delete was far quicker.
