Brown rice vs white rice
I got a 1kg bag of brown rice from Asda last.....Thursday, I think, and I've had pretty large portions all week, eating it usually twice a day and I'm not even a third of the way through the pack yet. V good value.
Anyway, I think I actually prefer brown rice to white rice now. I'd never had brown rice before. I do throw craploads (scientific term) of herbs and spices and yogurt and cream cheese sometimes on it, but not usually. It's remarkably good value AND it's tastier too. White rice can be more stodgy, in my experience. I wonder why, if it is cheap and just as tasty as white, why more folk don't use it. |

I had it for the first time the other week with a chile. I couldn't really tell the difference other than it seemed like undercooked white rice but it was masked by other flavours and was free cooked by a mate and I was pretty drunk so wasn't going to complain.

Have you tried wild rice, now that's nice. Expensive though.

I think brown rice actually has too much flavour in its own right to work in some dishes where blander white rice works better - accompanying a curry or chili for example. Brown rice is great for a rice salad, however.

Brown rice takes longer to cook. It's harder to digest too for some people.
But I am quite a fan, and have found that using a microwave steamer I can cook brown rice in 16 mins without pre-soaking

Isn't brown rice a grass ? Personally I find it indigestable. But I am not a fan of white rice either unless it's basmati or risotto rice.

The best rice I've tasted is Bhutanese red rice. Sainsburies did it a few years ago in their very expensive food section, but I've never seen it in the UK since

Brown rice is the same as white rice, just with less processing. Weirdly, brown rice generally costs more these days, even though it's less processed. |

Brown basmati rice is probably my favourite rice, nutty sort of flavour and usually has more of the basmati aroma than white.
I only buy small quantities because like all brown rice it goes off quicker. |

I make my own rice mix if I really fancy a rice dish.
