American audiences don't "get" our attitude of "loving the underdog".
British audiences don't "get" the attitude of "all or nothing".
If Russell went in week 1, Nancy in week 2, Lulu in week 3, Audley in Week 4 and Rory in Week 5, we'd have scores of threads on here moaning that "It's too boring, there's no light relief/Widdy type character"
Remember too, it's about mathematics as well as phone voting. At this point in the contest, you can probably work out the audience votes....
