So the BBC are planning a new soap set in Manchester apparently!

I dont know why they dont put their energy into saving EE's rather than making yet ANOTHER soap.

I can see why though. EE's is their biggest puller and the shows decline shook them up. ITV has Corrie and Emmerdale which have a large audience pull rate. So the BBC now need a back up plan just incase EE's ever went down hill so badly they got rid of it.

But we already have Corrie in in that part of the UK, why not somewhere else for gods sake. Just because the BBC is moving people to Manchester does not mean the soap has to be set there.

Cutting It is set up there as well - that would be a fabulous programme if it was developed from a drama to a soap

they should make a new soap set on the Isle of Wight.
They could call it "Neighbours : IOW"

Well, the bbc have GOT to set a new soap "up norf" cos they're under pressure to appeal to more people, and be more popular.

Of course, we all know they'd be far happier sticking to London, 'cos they think that's the centre of the universe.

So, the bbc will start a new soap in the north and give themselves a pat on the back, thinking that they're doing more for the regions. The smug, patronising *******s!

Yeh very true, Carolyn Reynolds, woman behind Corrie's success over past few years is apparently looking for a lunchtime soap for the Beeb and that is where it is to be located, in Manchester. So it won't be launched immediately to take over from EastEnders. I do think they should concentrate on saving EastEnders first.

A new soap set anywhere apart from London wouldn't bother me. Everyone contributes money to the BBC and some would probably like their area of the Country to be covered every now and then. But the BBC do already have shows based in Lancs and Yorks. What about Wales, Ireland, Scotland or other areas (North of Watford) where programmes never seem to be based?

Well the new series of Doctor Who is being filmed almost entirely in Cardiff (or Swansea - can't remember which), so thats filled the Wales quota.

Scotland = River City,

I suppose they could try and set a soap in Newcastle, or Cornwell or even some where in suffolk (saying that though - i live here and it's not that interesting).

I thought all that has been mentioned is that a new soap would be set in the North, so why does that automatically mean Manchester? I know some of the BBC departments are moving to Manchester but it doesn't mean a new soap has to be set here as well.
Corrie is the Manchester soap and it makes no sense at all to have another soap set in the same area!

Actually Dippit, Doctors the beebs day time soap is set in the Midlands - so thats the whole Birmingham aspect covered already.

Lancashire = Corrie
Yorkshire = Emmerdale

So i suppose in the end Tyneside is a reasonable bet.

Ah ok. Doctors is not shown here (Well it was, but I never watched it) so I wouldn't know that.

How about Bristol then?

Or they could do a beachside soap and have it set in Brighton (I would say Blackpool, but blackpool is to close to Manchester). Theres never been a UK seaside soap before (Well except for Eldorado of course).

Saying that, I realise that it has already been announced that the soap will be up North...but come on, theres three soaps up there already! BBC should do a soap in an area that has never been covered before.

No we need a West Midlands soap. It could be set in a village where 2 main roads crossover, perhaps in a hotel or similar.

Now that sounds like a brilliant and original idea for a soap - which could become a potential ratings winner. I'm sure thats a crossROAD thats never before been explored by the soap genre or ITV.

what about a soap set in a small town in a place like east anglia.
I'm sick of all the soaps being set up north.

Sounds more like it. She works for Granada, so I don't see how they'll let her work for bbc too.

I think its a massive mistake to set a new soap in Manchester, if just for the simple reason they're inviting immediate comparrision with Corrie. How ever much they say it's not like Corrie, the characters are different, the setting's different etc, everyone, press and viewers are immediately going to compare the two, and how ever good it is, it's likely to suffer in comparison to a programme of 40 odd years standing, emense history and extremely popularity. If they have to add another soap to the schedules, which I don't think they do, how about somewhere fresh?

Casualty..... Holby City....

For those who didn't realise both are filmed and based in Bristol (not entirely sure why they decided to call it Holby) and they don't really hide the fact either, seeing as when they occasionally mention phone numbers in scripts they begin 0117 which is the Bristol area code.

I'm pretty sure that Holby City is now or always has been filmed at Elstree, in a purpose built studio.

The beeb are also launching two new drama's which are set in Blackpool, so they won't film a soap there either.

Okay, well why waste time and money on a whole new soap that nobody will be interested in for at least a year (usually takes that long for the show to get into a good flow, know what works and what doesnt, etc.) when they could just show River City. I see a Weekday 8PM slot as great....

Monday 8PM: EastEnders
Tuesday 8PM: River City
Wednesday 8PM: EastEnders
Thursday 8PM: River City
Friday 8PM: EastEnders

However, if they really are intent on creating a new northern soap, I would definately say they should go for Newcastle.

Yep as in my above posts, some where in Tyneside (Newcastle or Middlesborough) is probably their best bet.

But like you allanc i too think they should just show River City UK wide now, i mean theres nothing majorly wrong with it - apart from the accents and slang, which people have trouble understanding at first, but after a month or so i pretty much got into it.

I just cant see this happening. I cannot see the BBC making such a huge commitment in the North. The BBC is centred around London and then home counties. They would be far more interested in locating such a project in sunnier climes such as the South of France or Spain etc so that the management can take themselves and their families on free holidays at our expense.
