Yep, thats right. It's only began fairly recently but pessimism and rivalry has started killing our soaps.

I'm not too sure when it started to be honest, but what I do know is that it's gone into overkill ever since the public started getting wind of the decline of EastEnders.

Here are some examples of a few of the posts that have appeared - "Emmerdale heading down the pan?" and "EastEnders: The Beginning of the End?".

People have started slating storylines for EastEnders before they've even been shown - I mean what is this, it's bloody pathetic! People have sky high expectations and will slate an episode even if it was pretty good! I mean, fair enough, there have been some awful episodes of EastEnders - but the constant slating is doing nothing.

Another thing is the rivalry. The whole EastEnders vs Corrie thing must stop NOW! I mean I've only just recently signed up for these forums but I've been viewing them for a long time. I'm not naming any names but decent discussions have turned into battles. Why can't everyone like both of the soaps? Or at the very least agree to disagree? But no, it's not civil at all. It's a slanging match, where people produce ratings, saying 'x got 11 million but y got 12.53 million - stick that up your arse x fans!'.

The press do read internet forums and it's just going to get worse if it doesn't STOP. These arguments and views are ruining the boards and the soaps. We are looking at our soaps in a bad light. We're supposed to love them, remember? From now - anyone who starts an argument is going to get a bollocking. I know I'm not the top dog here but I don't see any moderators doing anything!

If everyone is civil and looks for the good in the soaps, whilst pointing out some low points if necessary, discussions will become much better. Debate is brilliant - a good debate with balanced points and valid disagreements is excellent - but slanging matches are pointless.

Surely some people agree we could be having a laugh discussing why we LOVE the soaps, not why we HATE them?

I think the only reason it's happening so much at the moment is because one certain soap is beyond dreadful, another is on brilliant form, and another one is proving itself to be a big force now and also on brilliant form. Then the soap clashes which result in ratings wars don't help things.

If all soaps were doing good at the moment, then there wouldn't be so much of this.

Yes, EastEnders is terrible - but I'm just sick of all the negativity! We have people on these boards looking for trouble, those who just want to complain.

Why can't we just wait for the New Exec Producer of EE to start? We all know it's not going to be blockbuster for a while yet.

Everyone basically thinks EE is terrible. Why not leave the negatives now and then post positive things. If we want EE to improve, we have to wait for the good things and then post about them.

At the moment the constant negative comments are just making things worse.

We've had enough negative comments. Now we can wait until things pick up before posting about EE's future. Surely that's not a bad idea?

Thats true but over the years your going to have peaks and troughs, we are talking about shows that have been going on for twenty years or more.
What has compounded the problem is the competition from the glut of reality show, the ratings are going to be lower.

Maybe its a reality that we are going to have get used to?

Well maybe, but as long as it's rubbish, people are going to find it hard not to complain. Repetitive threads are annoying though, like "axe the Ferreiras". Like we haven't heard that before

Anyway, maybe it's just me, but I'm sure it's the EE fanatics who are making the problem more than anyone. They come in with idiotic comments directed towards Corrie or Emmerdale and then say something about EE that quite obviously a lot of people think is ridiculous, so it all kicks off. I'm thinknig BBC Blob, The Walford One and obviously Loopy Lisa.

When someone comes in trying to desperately defend something that's so bad, and then clutches at straws by attacking Corrie or Emmerdale with some weak point, people react..

But the best way to deal with idiots is to ignore them.
To be fair the idiocy is not contained to just EE fans, it got so bad there were threads attacking members a few weeks ago thats crazy.

Yes, but it's n'er impossible to remain ignorant of the many ridiculous threads that appear on this board.

The rivalry will never end, yet you must remember that it only takes one or two people to say something stupid, to which the majority react. This has been going on for ages, and the "guilty" parties are nearly always removed from the boards.

The problem really isn't as bad as it is made out to be, the vast majority of DS users come here and post constructive and well thought-out things, and have the ability to discuss topics maturely without allowing threads to descend into pointless bickering.

Just look at me for example, I love Coronation Street...I mean I really love Coronation Street yet I still feel that I am able to talk about other soaps maturely and without bias, perhaps the EE fanatics should take a leaf out of my book, but then again they do say "Thanky Thanky"

Very well said itsjay and may I say, welcome to DS! Its true, all this Corrie vs Enders vs Emmerdale shit is starting to grate on me a little too. And its very true, its the fanatics, namely the EastEnders fanatics who are coming in making ridiculous statements and attacking other soaps because they know they're in the wrong, they are ruining the boards. I think best thing to do is just ignore ignore ignore. I saw another thread today "Axe the Ferreiras" ehh hello? we've been discussing that, its been discussed, we all hate them, lets move along shall we?

Yes, there's so much repetition that this place is starting to become truly stale.

There has always been rivalry between Corrie and Eastenders, the same way in the 80's you had Dallas and Dynasty fans battleing it out, I was strictly a Dallas girl myself and hated the fact Dynasty was even compared considering they were so different. The same can be said for Corrie and Eastenders plus the press love to stir it up.

What is interesting about the whole thing is quickly opinion can change, Eastenders was the soap with street cred which has been totally washed away which is why its in a very vulnerable position, the same thing happened to Crossroads in the 80's, it became the show you would not admit you watched and Enders is heading towards that junction but luckily there is time to pull it back. If we had another year of these dreaful stories then the show would be in complete turmoil.

The thing is that with most soaps they go through a bad patch, sometimes lasting for 4 months, but the Producers of Eastenders lost total sight of this and rather than listening to critics and fans continued down that route. About 12 months ago the BBC decided it needed to attract a teen demographic, they felt the teen audience were dropping and as a consquence Louise was instructed to aim the show at that age group. They even had a meeting to look at interactive games to incorporate using your red button as it was felt the missing teens were now off on their pcs and gaming.

In hindsight this was a mistake, you dont need to patronise teens by making a show for teens, teens are like anyone else and want decent stories. Also this is why you cant solely blame Louise, she was TOLD to hit that demographic and use EE's to do that.

The day EastEnders starts introducing games and interactive red button nonsense during the episodes, is the day I switch off for good.

I argee with everything you have said but the main problem on these boards is that Tweenie's and kid's seem to think that what they post is the truth.

Eastenders is no where near as bad as people are making out yes it has been down but it will recover most of the people who do not want it to are just jealous corrie fans .

Well no offence Loopy Lisa Chez, but I've seen many a post by you which suggest complete and utter bias towards EastEnders and against Coronation Street - including fake ratings in a post titled something similar to 'EastEnders ratings on the up'.

Hey Itjay...........have you heard of freedom of speech? Sorry to say Itjay but if people feel strongly that a soap is going downhill then they are more then welcome to say so, that goes for those who think it is great. But that doesn't mean we need to agree with eachother.
