Well at £10, fake is the first thing that sprang to mind ... is it easy to fool disk management into thinking it is 64GB when it may be only 4GB or something ??

They are designed to show up as the advertised capacity. It's only when you start using them or run a fake utility that you'll find out they are dodgy. There are loads of them on the market, so it's easy to trick the unsuspecting punter.

About time prices for hard drives started to come back down to normal reasonable levels, especially after all the
problems I've had recently, with my 1.37TB WD15EARS drive suddenly having a malfunctioning PCB, causing
phantom bad sectors to be detected by HDD Regenerator. I had hoped to get a 1.86TB WD hard drive but the
prices have been prohibitively high wherever they've still had these particular HDDs in stock.

As luck would have, I managed to acquire a 1.86TB Samsung HDD from dabs.com two weeks ago for £85.
At last, I thought an online retailer that hadn't hiked prices on all their existing inventory of new HDD's!

Good job I got it when I did ... that particular HDD had risen to £130 when I last looked on Wednesday!

You might want to monitor dabs.com as well. They currently have a 2TB WD HDD for £5 less at £119.98.

Still a bit too much, but it might down in price at the same time as the one you're looking at on ebuyer.

Not quite. Although we're starting to see signs of prices starting to fall slowly back to reasonable levels,
a number of online outlets still have the WD20EARX 2TB hard drive in stock at prices exceeding £100.

It'll still be a while longer before drives like this are reasonably priced at most retailers.

It lasted longer than usual because they had 50+ in stock. Deals like that usually go very quickly but that lasted 1 or 2 days.

They still have the Samsung F4 for £74.99 which is an even better deal - http://bit.ly/s4dzns

The F4 is my drive of choice but I'm waiting until they come back down to around £60 before buying.

The price has gone up by £1 since I posted that. Unless you specifically need a new internal 2TB hard drive,
that external USB HDD is still about the best deal you can get until all other HDD prices return to normal.

The cheapest I've seen the Samsung F4 2TB in recent weeks is £69.98 from Amazon.

This is the drive I want and I could do with one sooner rather than later so I hope prices drop in the next month or so.

i would say you have more to lose by waiting than you have to gain.

that is to say if you can get it now for £70 your maximum upside, the most you are going to save is like ~£20 but if the price rockets your maximum downside is huge.

netapp announced this morning that they will be raising their prices from February so i guess they don't think the price is coming down any time soon.

Yes, £70 isn't that bad at all really. I think waiting for them to come back down to what they used to be before the floods isn't a good idea because that will probably take a long time. To be honest I was more put off by Amazon's notoriously bad packaging of hard drives than the price.

At this time, the Samsung F4 EcoGreen 2TB hard drive is currently £104.99 from Amazon. It would seem
the price has risen considerably since you last checked. Hopefully it'll come back down soon if you're willing
to wait however long it takes for prices to drop, and if you specifically want an internal HDD.

The WD external drive I've mentioned still appears to be the best deal right now at £79.99 + delivery.
