This morning I heard a commotion outside and when I went out my neighbour's partner was chasing my cat, shouting and throwing stones at him. I shouted the cat in and the neighbour ran in and closed the door.

A short while ago my children were in the garden playing and my cat was sitting on the fence playing with them. My neighbour came out saying loudly, "I'm really starting to get p****d off with these f*****g cats". I don't think she knew I was listening but maybe she did. She then came out and started swearing again, which upset my 7 year old daughter.

I'm just looking for some advice on what to do about it please.. It's almost impossible to stop my cat going into their garden.

He isn't the only cat in the neighbourhood. Almost every house has one nearby.

If he's toileting in someone else's garden I don't know what to do about it. I have an indoor tray and he pees in my own garden. I'm going to put a sand box behind the shed also.

I haven't spoken to the neighbour as she is obviously heated if she is swearing in front of little children and she has her partner to back her up. I'm just not going to get involved in an argument or go looking for one.

I think the fact every house has a cat (as you say) is the problem. We live in flats and many of the flats have a cat, on their own that is fine but when it adds up to 25 cats those of us who don't have them start getting a bit angry. Now I would never shout swear or throw things but looking at my tiny veg patch covered in cat Pooh and seeing the grounds generally covered in and and knowing if my dogs did anything like the cats do I could be evicted for causing nuisance.

I sympathise with your neighbour.

The only answer is less cats or keep them in doors and not let them cause a problem for your neighbours.

I'd report him to the RSPCA for throwing stones at your cat. I'd also try and get him on camera doing this too.

My kado or one of the black and whites that go out got blamed for cat pooping in the flat garden near me a few months back. I had the woman go on and on. It wasnt any of mine because they hadnt been out when it happened. My kado would more likely go into someones house and use the litter tray. I have had the throwing stones at my friends cats one day he did it and the next time he used his lawnmower it broke as he went over the stones. Another neighbour chased a cat that i was cat sitting for and was realy nasty too it. He just dropped down dead the man not the cat. Another neighbour who hates cats tried too hit a neighbours cat with a brush just because he walked into his garden. He also drives his car straight at any cats on the road. Thats one reason i keep guinness in. I would have said something. Everybody knows i have cats any if anybody threatend any of them i wouldnt be responsible for my actions.

I agree with this, we are overrun by cats, every house has them apart from us, they use our garden as a massive litter tray and we are constantly having to chase them out while they are pooping in our shingle, on our doorstep, on our garden furniture even. Less cats is the answer but as that wont happen, then neighbours need to realise the problem and keep their animals under control, in the house if need be.

I sympathise with the neighbour, ok, swearing was not the best thing to do, but they must be at the end of their tether with so many cats allowed to roam free and ruin their garden.

Its a shame really but as more and more people get more than one cat there are going to be problems.

Its sad that your one as its next door is going to get the blame whatever cat does whatever its doing to pee them off. Maybe they caught it pooing, or digging up the garden I don't know

Maybe keep it in for a while after eating so it does its business in its tray?

He generally stays in. He goes into the garden if the children or myself go out. They don't even wan
t him sitting on the fence.

I do sympathise with people who have other peoples pets in their garden.

I'm going to dig a bed tomorrow and fill it with soil and sand to encourage him to stay in the garden.

the trouble is that people see cats in their garden and assume they're pooing in it and the chances are they're just passing through. Some cats are instinctively roamers and to keep them in is cruel - what i do is let mine out early of a morning or really late at night when it's dark so there's less chance of neighbours seeing her. If i had my way i'd keep suki in all the time but she just loves to be outdoors.

I've got two outdoor cats, and I can actually understand non-cat owners getting fed up with the mess - it's all over the bottom of my garden as well, but at least they're my cats! Fortunately my neighbours are all cat lovers anyway, and my two are so old that they don't roam much now outside their own garden.

Not sure what the answer is, but I can certainly see the problem. My third cat is an indoor one!

Its not cruel at all. Also letting cats out really early is disastrous for wildlife .

I have to agree i dont dislike cats but there is always one pooing in my garden or leaving dead birds in it, my garden is for my children to play in, their veggie patch, their sand pit i shouldnt have to worry all the time about what presents they may find when they open the back door.

Cats can still go out in their owners gardens they can be cat proofed no different than having adequate fencing for a dogs or keep them in it really is that simple

Perhaps you could treat the neighbours to some of that 'Get Off' spray that is meant to deter cats.

Just a thought, I don't know if it works or not. I have heard cats don't like the smell of orange. Is it possible to put some orange peel at the boundary of your garden so that your cat won't get into your neighbor's garden?

I've put cat stay away granules all round near the fence. It's a 6 foot fence so I've already paid nearly 2000 to try and keep the cat in. He should be able to sit on my own fence which is nowhere near the neighbours house and backs onto a public road.

I've also dug a pit for him to dig in behind the shed so hopefully he'll use it.

Poor guy. He's such a soft little thing and was rescued recently. He's been through enough I think.

Perhaps make a cattery run in your garden - keeps cat on your property and stops neighbour attempting to harm it.

Report him to RSPCA. Sadly we have no control where a cat go when he/she is let out. And it's a risk. In the mean time go to the house and tell him to stop throwing stones at your cat cause not only are you hurting the cat your also scaring your children. Cats do go in others garden when needing the toilet and if the owner of the house see's this they should simply shout it away without harming or touching the cat.

You said the neighbour was chasing it and you didn't know if it was going to the toilet in their garden , so its not just sitting on your fence.

What about all round the fencing have something tilting inwards so the cat cant climb over?

They chase him when he sits on the fence. I've caught them shouting and chasing him when they're walking along the road and he is sitting.

thats more than my aunt paid to entirely cat prrof her garden with trellis net and whatever else is needed to keep her cats in and her garden is blooming huge includes 2 big cat runs that she had before proofing the garden it can be done if you are worried about your cats safety

Im not disputing that. But if it does go a toilet in their garden/digs up their plants, then maybe they are striking before it does it again

Im not saying they are right, but I grow veg and fruit and I would do the same ( not stones but bits of dirt or water) if It was going to the toilet in my garden and I love cats.

My cat would find a 6ft fence a doddle, especially wood, he would just run up it! We have just started letting him out and have a fence between us and 3 neighbours, the only garden he goes in is the one where the neighbours really really dislike him, the others are fine..Why does he want to go there so much..

hahaha Funny isnt it that cats always go sit on the lap of someone who dont like them, its something to do with eyes

When humans are happy they open their eyes very wide, cats dont do or like that , they go to people who are looking at them with half open eyes

i would love to cat proof our garden but there is no way we can really. he easily runs up the 6ft fence, and even if we made it taller he would jump over using the guinea pig hutches as a step up or the shed. our estate is over run with cats mainly due to a couple of related families who dont bother with neutering and at the last count were up to around 15 cats each with numerous pregnant.

i guess we are lucky that our neighbours he does visit (usually to drink from their ponds) like cats. im more than happy for them to give him a soaking or shout at him or chase him if he toilets in their garden, he has our garden to use or even fields 2 doors up. as long as they do nothing to physically hurt him im fine with it. he knows hes safe in our garden, so he can stay here if he doesnt like it!

You dont keep making the fence taller, you add something else to it but tilting it inwards.
