IM(not very)HO Bob Dylan is a great poet but suffers from a lousy singing voice and style. Like the Beatles, many of his songs have been covered (and vastly improved) by others. My favourites include:

Love Minus Zero/No Limit - Eliza Gilkyson
My Back Pages - Joan Osborne & Jackson Browne
A Simple Twist of Fate - Joan Baez
To Ramona - Sinead Lohan
It Ain't Me Babe - Nancy Kaplansky or Marianne Faithfull (TYP)
All Along The Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix

any more for any more?

The ultimate Dylan cover is Manfed Mann's 'Mighty Quinn'

Another great Dylan cover, 'If Not For You' by George Harrison.

Olivia Newton John also did a version of if not for you and manfred mann also did a version of just like a woman.Wasn't there an album by a band in the 60s-i think it could have been the hollies-that consisted entirely of their versions of dylan songs?

Dream Syndicate - Blind Willie McTell

Not a patch on the original but still great. The orginal is worth getting your hands on. Unlike anything Dylan has written/performed (or at least what I've heard from him).

I like Dylans style, and some of his songs just sound wrong without it. The Band's version of I Shall Be Released is the best a Dylan song ever sounded when done by another artist/band imo.

How about newlywed Billy Joel's version of 'To Make You Feel My Love'. Garth Brooks also did a rather poor version.

To put a bit of a different angle on the thread, Bobby D did a cover of Creep by Radiohead. It was pretty pants

Nah, those versions, although okay, don't touch the original. Dylan's voice just sounds so right on that song, with those lyrics.

Transvision Vamp did 'Crawl out your window' on their 'Little magnets vs. the bubble of babble' album, if that's any help.

C'mon mate, I saw Dylan at IoW, I've been a fan of his for years, even though I thought he sold out after John Wesley Hardin, he redeemed himself with Nashville Skyline & Blood on the Tracks. But he could never, ever have been credited as having the best singing voice ever. Even Joan Baez sounds better than Dylan when she parodies him on "A Simple Twist of Fate"

I think there is a big difference though between being a good singer and having an enjoyable voice to listen to.

Dylan can't sing but I do enjoy listening to him sing and listening to the way he delivers his songs, especially the ones with a little venom in them.

Most of my favourite singers can't sing.
