If some thought Bruce was good on Saturday night, it might be because that these days there ain't much of quality live singing on the TV, with which to compare.
I thought he had trouble holding a lot of notes during the early part of the song, probably partly due to nerves.
Play it back on i>Player and check for yourself.
It reminded me a bit of the wavery voice of Clive Dunn in Dad's Army, who at the time, was just playing an old man.
The whole, was a bit embarrassing, in my opinion. I can't see anyone rushing out to buy his CD.
But his standard of singing, isn't up now to the quality of the band singers and I've never thought it was. He was always a good all-round entertainer/presenter, with comedy, dance, singing and a bit of "average" piano playing, an accomplishment in itself, but he never really excelled at any, musically.
Much the same as the late Roy Castle.
To use Strictly as an opportunity to plug a CD, (no other reason for it this week) is a bit of an insult.
I hope he plays back this recording and appreciates that it really is time to stop singing live. It was much the same with Sinatra, (although in a different league) the best male popular music singer of his time, but he gave some poor live performances and made some really bad recordings towards the end of his life which did his reputation no good at all.
It's the same with us all, "the older we get, the better we used to be."
I don't know why he bothers, he can't need the money, the answer may be the way he tried to milk the applause at the end, the audience encouraged by a likely out of shot studio manager.
He just craves the attention.
