OMG he murdered Hard to Handle (the people who rated this video must be deaf or something)- I didn't know he ever did this song. Such a bad choice for a strictly pop/ballad type of singer, he should have never do a soul/r&b classic, and especially song from the king of deep soul music- wonderful Otis Redding. It's like Gary didn't know (or still doesn't know?) his limitations, he's got no soul in his voice.
I understand this was a cover of Black Crowes rockin' rendition, but still Chris Robinson has enough soul in his voice to pull this song very well.
TBH Gary is also as bad in rock style , so unnatural it actually hurts.
The video of Nirvana cover is embarassing but quite funny to watch. You're right sheila blige, Gary is the worst in it (maybe it's because from all members he seems to be the less connected with this genre?). I think none of them is cut out to be a rock star . - even Robbie.

You've made a mockery of the show, not Johnny (the person you levelled that accusation at).

You were never cut out to do this job or fill this role. Unfortunately, you've somehow managed to come across as both smug and desperate. You've thrown away your integrity and credibility by backing an act everyone knows is unable to sing. When it became apparent that you couldn't force Frankie to produce a talent he does not have, instead of admitting defeat, you attempted to bolster him by lying and insulting perfectly decent acts instead. As a judge, your only job is to provide honest, objective critique. When you admit to lying about an act, you no longer deserve to keep your job.

I find it really uncomfortable to watch a once respected man damage his own reputation and lose his fan's respect.

A lot of fans are very disappointed in him! You only have to look around the boards to see that much. You can't just say "whoever isn't happy now wasn't a fan to start with". He hasn't met a lot of people's basic expectations. Taking this show too seriously compared to what? World hunger? You could say that about anything. Dismissing an opinion as "too serious" doesn't actually mean anything.

It would have helped Frankie to have an honest critique (not "slate" ) from Gary, because Frankie is very unpopular with a lot of people at the moment, probably unnecessarily. I am not part of any "baying mob" but Frankie himself was actually done a disservice when Gary admitted to having lied about him. It's quite a nasty thing to say to someone, actually.


First of all, some of the things Gary has said (eg. "I would never say something like that about Louis' act!") have been ridiculously hypocritical, or just factually wrong.

Secondly, Louis is the only judge I actually respect at the moment. He's the only one who got rock week right, he's the only one who's done the show before, and he's the only one who's remained himself pretty consistently without being rude to anyone, and he's the only one who's given an honest opinion on Frankie! You might think Louis is interested in the "joke factor" (subjective, some people would say it's a necessary part of the show for the sake of entertainment) but you could argue Gary has a novelty act as well at this point!

Tell me again how that would help?...Their jobs as the mentors is to give constructive advice to the other acts, and protect/nurture, and look out for their own acts....Never in my 8 years have i seen a mentor turn on his own act whether bad or good...and you want Gary to do that now?

Gary seems to be the only one who genuinely cares...He spends a lot of time with his own acts and the other judges acts...They have nothing but nice things to say about him...What you see on the sat/sun is pantomime...The real work is backstage...Kelly runs off and leaves hers...Tulisa has no idea what she's doing, and Louis never did care...Just more work/money for him.

Yeah... but Gary always says he takes this singing competition very seriously, he's very serious about finding a new talent, it was him who insisted to not let the novelty acts through to the next stages....Gary seemed THE MOST serious out of all judges about XF...yet he managed to get through the least talented (with no singing talent) contestant to the live shows..... oh IRONY, isn't it?
That's why people are disappointed. Gary lost credibility choosing Frankie in "judges houses" stage- because even then he knew Frankie was crap singer. His second mistake was getting rid of James over Frankie.
Now he can't even be honest about Cocozza and his lack of singing talent (after all he's his mentor, he can't abandon Frankie) - this insincerity is off putting. But if he really believes Frankie is a good singer and a future rock star- then he's turning into a joke in my eyes...

It's also about good looks.

It's also about drama and scandal.

It's also about how well you can dance to it after binging on 10 blue WKDs on a Saturday night.

It's also about behind-the-scenes influence.

It's also about which members of a boy band give you a heightened sense of sexual pleasure when you look at them.

It's also about what fashion style the music correlates to.

It's also about how well the music is marketed to each demographic.

And so on...

In fact, I very much doubt that people care about music and only music at all these days. Granted, you should listen to whatever you enjoy and what makes you feel good but please, please try and look deeper than: "Phwwoooar, I would sh*g him!"

Gary is dreadful, uncomfortable to watch, stiff in his suit and tightly drawn up tie, looking for an image that he simply hasn't got. His only redeeming feature to date on X Factor is having the good sense to put Frankie through. Why he choose those 2 losers Craig and Marcus is a mystery.

Tulisa is the best judge and Louis is Louis. Kelly is falky plus has the disadvatage of sitting next to Gary and the double act connection between the two is a pain to watch.

I've written posts of my own saying I feel bad for Frankie, so it isn't me you need to say that to. Getting praise and then being told on live TV that the person "lied for you" must be a horrible thing to go through, Barlow was out of order. And yes, I do believe giving Frankie honest feedback would really have helped him! How is he supposed to improve without constructive advice?! And how can he be being given constructive advice when his own mentor lies about what he thinks?


Where have I said he needs to "turn on his own act"?! Firstly, the judges are supposed to protect terrible acts by not letting them go through so they don't get ripped to pieces in public. Now, it's too late, and giving Frankie constructive advice about the lack of strength in his voice would probably help them pick better songs/a better image/etc. All of it is subjective and depends on your opinion. My opinion is that Gary is doing a bad job by being pretty blatantly untruthful. I don't feel like he's protecting Frankie because it helps Frankie, but because he's too embarrassed to admit he backed someone who can't sing.

What the other judges do with their time is irrelevant to this topic. I don't think pushing Frankie's "jack the lad" image is a good one to push, and I don't think he's being given the best song choices for his voice, either. You keep replying to things I've not said, like "as for the voting him through... how is that Gary's fault?". I haven't said anything about that. But since you brought it up, how about the fact he gave praise to his own act which he later admitted was a lie?


I don't agree with this. It's the mentor's job to be realistic and supportive, not just lie to you while the real world dislikes you. I've posted on other threads saying I actually feel bad for Frankie. You don't seem to understand that it's possible to think Gary is doing a bad job/is unsuited to this TV judging role and still have empathy for his acts.


This isn't the thread to discuss other judges, this is a thread about Gary. I haven't said I particularly like the other judges, have I? Louis is the best of a bad bunch, this year. Gary, for me, is the worst. And no matter what you say about other people lying, it was absolutely awful of Gary to sit there and say he lied about his own act.

And lastly, since you're replying to these posts, I'd say you're taking this about as seriously as I am.

Both Gary and kelly lost the plot when he told Frankie he would never be a rockstar (WHY)

Gary will never have the charisma or showmanship of Robbie(FACT)
