Hi Richard
I'm in the same situation.
My choice so far is either a Humax Foxsat HDR £227 [pros:- seems to be market leader, twin tuner, good PQ. negatives:- now at end of life.
Or a Technisat HD FS [great build quality & PQ, but only single tuner!] circa £170 inclu USB WD 500GB HD.
Does he have an HD TV?
My delay is user friendliness as mum is 93! Rather difficult to determine until you actually own it.

The Technisat HDFS is not very user friendly when it comes to setting recordings and playing them back.

(The remote has no dedicated record / playback keys).

Also it is not Freesat+ and thus just has a simple timer record function with padding (no series link data support).

The Samsung is another alternative which is Freesat+

Automan.

You might want to consider an "A" grade Foxsat-HDR-G from humaxdirect.co.uk . 320GB, 12 month guarantee. currently £169 or there abouts. Purchased one myself back in the summer, arrived quickly, looks and works like new. In my opinion value for money. (managers specials)
