Hi all, my sister bought a Kindle 3G last week, she has followed the instructions on charging the battery but when she puts the Kindle to 'sleep' gets a sort of screensaver, she then puts it down but by the following morning the battery is dead? Is it faulty or is she closing it down wrong?

Make sure 3G is turned off when not in use as that can run down the battery.
I also charge mine from the mains because charging via usb/computer never seems to work.

It sounds faulty to me. Mine lasts over a month before it needs charging.

Yeah she is charging via mains and only wifi is switched on but will get her to switch this off unless she needs to download. The device has a green light before she goes to bed that's why it's bizarre it's dead by morning, presume switching off is purely sliding the on/off switch across until the screensaver appears? Even so I wouldn't expect it to discharge the battery overnight even if left on all night!

Leaving the WiFi on will dramatically reduce battery life, and having 3G turned on even more so, make sure both are turned off, and see how it lasts then.

You can't leave the Kindle turned 'on' overnight, after a few minutes inactivity it shuts down automatically.

The green light should not be on when sleeping, it just blinks and turns off. If it is on the whole time it's wrong. If it is off, wireless is off and the battery is dead by the morning it is faulty, get a replacement. The battery is fully charged when the light changes to green when charging.

Not sure if this helps, but if you just switch the slider across it runs the screen saver, to turn it off fully she needs to hold the switch across for at least 5 seconds. If you hold the switch across for long enough, the green light should go out.

Even with wireless on, it will still last a couple of weeks in standby, so there does sound like something is wrong - The green light staying on isn't right, either. May be worth trying the 'hard' shutdown in the post above and see what that does.

Agree. I get a month on battery with wireless off, and at least a couple of weeks with it on. Draining overnight is definitely faulty!

Constant use of 3G WILL drain battery very quickly !

(if I download a very long webpage, I turn 3G off while reading it!)

If not charging, do a device re-start, in settings. That may fix it.

(NOT "factory settings", which will erase all stored files!).

Charging via computer USB port will take MUCH LONGER than the SMPS "plug" provided!

When fully charged, switch light goes from yellow to green.

I think your device is faulty. I would return it. I leave the 3G on and it lasts weeks.

Not sure why people are saying 3G and wi-fi will drain the battery more quickly. This is obvious but the OP said the battery is dead the next morning... this is faulty and nothing related to whether the wi-fi and 3G is on or off. I think we can all agree it should not be dead the following morning regardless

I'm not so sure that's "clearly faulty", but, certainly, if that's half suspected then returning device is probably best.

Remember to sync device, so that any Amazon purchased books will still be on your account (free nobi books should be transferred to your computer for temporary storage).

Could easily be a faulty charger.

The books purchased from the Amazon store can be re-downloaded at any time to any device, no need to sync them.
