Okay,
Get as much experience as you can performing live.
Get honest, objective opinions about your voice and ability.(Don't trust vocal coaches unless they have a great track record-many are honest, but just as many will tell you what you want to hear.Unless they have a career as a working vocalist themselves, they probably won't be much help in any way.)
Build an online and a locel presence.
Develope as a performer and vocalist.Only real life gigging experience will help you to do this.Sorry, but that's reality.
IF you have talent, you will likely be "encouraged" to audition, and bypass the cattle call auditions, which are to make up the numbers ,or,at the least, you will have a much better shot at standing out.
Unknown, inexperienced singers rarely make the show, and almost never make a more serious talent show.
I wouldn't be surprised if Frankie was a genuine off-the-street audition. If you want to be like him and just have a ride on the famecoaster,go for it,but if you genuinely want to give singing a try,I'd say don't do X Factor ,and if you must, don't do it blind.
