Bee Gees are the best pop songwriters of all time
I'm into rock, punk and hardcore but gotta admit these boys are the best at pop music bar none
Straight fight between them Beatles and Abba but if you compare the greatest hits the Bee Gees shade it for me |

There is no doubt the Bee Gees wrote great songs for themselves and for other artists, but how many great albums did they record. They never made a 'Revolver' or a 'Sgt. Pepper'. No for me Lennon and McCartney have been the greatest pop songwriters by a country mile.

It's always been very fashionable to knock the Bee Gees, and they seemed to suffer most from the disco backlash, but the truth is they have written many outstanding songs - their own back catalogue is incredible and then you add into that the albums they did with other artists, particularly Barbra Streisand and Dionne Warwick were superb works. I don't think you can compare them to Lennon/McCartney - different styles of music, but what I would certainly say is that when you consider the greatest writers of popular music, then the Bee Gees certainly deserve to be on the same playing field as Lennon/McCartney, Abba and Bacharach/David.

I take your point about the album but Satruday Night Fever is the biggest selling soundtrack of all time and is full of classics that represented a whole generation.
As you say they tend to get prigeon holed into the falsetto disco song genre but just look at the Bee Gees back catalogue New York Mining Disaster, To Love Somebody, Massachusetts, Words, Gotta Get a Message to You, How can you mend a broken heart, lonely days, jive talkin, nights on broadway, if i cant have you, you should be dancing, stayin alive, how deep is your love, night fever, more than a woman, tragedy, guilty, heartbreaker, islands in the stream, you win again, immortality, grease soundtrack also |

I'd give that accolade to either Stevie Wonder or Brian Wilson.

What about someone like madonna? she's been on the music scene for like 20 years, and can always bring a new element to her music to keep up with the times.

Madonna is many great things - but one of the best pop songwriters of all time is not one of them.

Quote from Bee Gees biographer on their official site
"Only last week, my wife and I were having dinner with Brian Wilson. When we asked him to choose dinner music, he asked for the Bee Gees. While one of their CDs played, I asked him where he ranked the group in his personal top ten. Very softly but definitively, he said "Number One." We said, "Ahead of the Beatles?" He said, "Yes." We said, "Ahead of the Beach Boys?" Again, he said, "Yes." |

Radiostar called it right, how many Bee Gee's albums other than Sat Night Fever can you name? Great songwriters but more of a singles act. Whoever said Madonna was having a laugh, for a start she uses writers on many of her tracks.
Lennon and McCartney are streets ahead of any one else and always will be. Look at the effect of their music on culture, we study it in schools, their music is played everywhere daily, Off the top of my head they recorded and released three of the greatest records of all time - Rubber Soul, Revolver and Sgt. Pepper in a 3 year period between '65 and '67. Nowdays it takes most major acts 4 years to release one record. Listen to their earlier stuff like Love me do, then listen to Tomorrow never knows off Revolver to see how they evolved, like all great writers do. Brian Wilson admits in his autobiography that the pressure of topping Revolver and Sgt. Pepper caused his mental breakdown, Lennon played him Revolver, he went home tried to write a new record to top it, then Lennon played him a copy of Sgt. Pepper and it drove him crazy trying to compete. To copy a phrase from the great Brian Clough "I wouldn't say the Beatles were the greatest songwriters of all time, but they are in a league of one." |

I think Sgt. Pepper is really overrated.
But "Too Much Heaven" is one of my favourite songs ever Sara. |
