CD Mixers
I'm thinking of getting some CD players to go with my mixing set up.
I play trance mainly, and create sets and mix CDs (never play live). At the moment I've got two technics decks, and a pioneer mixer, but I want to add two CD players. I'd like to be able to access a lot of the promos I can get through the web, and cut down the amount I spent on vinyl. I'd love some Pioneer CDJs, but my budget doesn't stretch that far. ![]() I've had a look round, and there's two main choices - something in the style of the CDJ (Denon and Gemini make some), or CD players with seperate head units. I'm like the look of the Numark CDN36 or CDN90, where the head units have a large jog dial for cueing - are these easy enough to use for beat mixing? Many thanks

Perhaps rather than that you could go for something computer based. I have seen stuff like this knocking around. You could rip an CD's as WAV to keep the quality, do whatever you need to do and then reburn them as CD's.
Now i know this certain model looks a bit cack, but I'm sure there are other similar bits of kit that are also not a lot more. |

I'm not sure - I'd rather have something indepenant of a PC... although I was looking at FinalScratch, which seemed good.

I know you said you couldn't stretch to Pioneers, but for me, there really is no other choice. In the same way that 1210's are the 'only' choice for vinyl, the cdj's are the 'only' choice for cd's. If you can't stretch to the 1000's then I've seen the 800's offered at £450 or £800 a pair and they are pretty close in spec. You say you play trance so I guess you wouldn't be too bothered not to be able to scratch on them - unless you want to be the next Eddie Halliwell!
The jog wheel works incredibly well, you can multiple cue, loop and sample, the abiltiy to lock the pitch is amazing. When I went to Ibiza in the summer I was taken aback by just how much the Pioneers have taken over. Sasha, Tall Paul, Morillo, Seb, Tiesto all played exclusively on cd. Zabiella turned to vinyl on a few occasions but was predominately off cd and I saw him and Sasha play for about 8 hours at Space! In time you could then throw a Pioneer Efx into the mix as well, some of the effects Zabiella knocked up were amazing, adding breakdowns all over the show. It's been said before, buy cheap and you buy twice, maybe build up one deck at a time, give it a year or two and the covers won't come off your 1210s. |

I'm tempted... very tempted. I was really surpised this year in Ibiza too - hardly anyone's playing of vinyl now - and at Global Gathering too, all the arenas had CDJs.
