You must remember, at 45, the only gay men in the public eye during Johnny's formative years
were pople like Larry Grayson and John Inman. They were joined latterly by singers such as Marc Almond and Boy George, but by then, the camp persona was established as really the only way for a young gay man to stamp his personality and say "I'm different" up until the early 80's. Johnny is a product of his time, and growing up in a small conservative town (both big C and little c) exacerbated that.
I can understand why Bo why you find him irritating, but i can assure completely, he
is bieng himself. He's no different now to how he was at sixteen.
