If her choreography really was that woeful and putting off people, she and Matt wouldn't have got the votes. Fanbase alone can't carry you the whole way to the final, as Ann Widdecombe proved. They were never going to win last year, Kara and Artem were too good and had it all - the story, the journey, the injury crisis, the class and style - everything that meant they deserved the win. Matt and Aliona were fabulous, but not winners even before that showdance (which is my personal low point for Aliona's choreography, though Artem didn't do much better)
The fact is, she stuck to the rules as they were last year, and utilised them to create routines that clearly won over the public and did get high marks from the judges. I don't like props, but I can't deny that she used them creatively - the swing in the VW was much better than whoever it was (Scott I think?) dancing around a cauldron on Halloween week. She did nothing wrong in terms of the rules of the show, and while I'd love to see her choreograph more dances that are pure dance, until props are banned, no-one can blame her or any of the pros for using them as they do grab attention.
At the end of the day, Kara and Artem used nearly as many props as Matt and Aliona, Artem's choreography was almost as creative as Aliona's (AS, anyone?), yet it's Aliona who gets slated and Artem's a creative genius. I just don't get how they're so different in the end, and how it seems to be impossible on here to like them both...”

I agree whole-heartedly.
I understand why Artem doesn't get blamed for his choreos as much as Aliona. It's like the difference between pop music and jazz music. Majority of people prefer pop music (which is why it's called pop) and think jazz is just a bunch of incoherent noise. You ask a musician, and they'd pick jazz over pop any day.
I'm saying the difference between Artem and Aliona is as vast as pop and jazz music, but it's similar. Take their ballroom tangos for example. Artem has choreographed 2 Tangos, quite low on content, but both well received, because they both used simple and concrete concepts: sexuality. Take Aliona's tangos from the same series: Last year's tango with Matt was full of content, she used dancing (instead of poses, lifts or props) to express the music. But when you mention this dance to anyone all they remember is the little shape they did at the end which Len didn't like. This year's tango: had about as much content in it as either one of Artem's tangos, but we all remember the fuss that was made (and is still being made) over how contentless it was. No one even mentioned how cleverly she had used different types of hold to demonstrate the relationship she and Harry were portraying, while dancing at the same time.
