I didn't really like the change as there was no need to change it - straight guys can and do sing lyrics as they are so it's not like it would really be a massive statement, whereas changing them did make it a thing.

I think it was good anyway, but that lil bit jarred a bit for me.

That was a perfectly reasonable question.

Changing the lyrics like that was absolutely pathetic.

Craig out tomorrow please.

Clearly to get all those female admirers thinking they're in with a chance.

No, he did.. I didn't recognise it until he got to the chorus and I still wasn't really sure after that as I got bored and went to make tea.

I very much doubt that anyone is voting for Craig because they fancy him, so it was absurd to change it

Didnt realise he was gay always thought he had a soft spot for Sophie.

Well I have slightly changed your post based on my interpretation of it.

It makes no sense really does it?

Which is all the more reason he should have demanded to leave the lyrics as they are.

And the second part of my post is my guess at why he didn't.

Yes he should have left it how it was. Particularly as the girls often keep the gender references the same when they do boy songs

I wasn't being serious anyway, I can see where you're coming from. But, I'm gay myself and I would never go on national tv and sing about fancying or wanting girls. I would find it a bit weird tbh. And I like him too, not sure where all the hate is coming from for him tonight.

Yeah, im gay as well and would never sing about getting girls, it isnt me.

What gets me big time though is the X Factors casual homophobia like how they refuse to allow any sign of homosexuality outside of sterotypes.

the best cover version of all time was The White Stripes "Jolene" and Jack White still sang the lyrics "please don't take my man" even tho he's straight.. so does it really matter

That's so true. It's like Johnny represents every gay guy out there

Who was the guy a few years ago who was gay (not sure if he was openly or not, memory's quite vague on this) but it was quite cringeworthy when Cowell said "I bet you LOVED those female dancers" as though trying to "straighten" him out.

But surely that was the OP's whole point....it's the *changing* of the lyrics that s/he objected to. Keeping the song's original gender reference is fine. The problem is when they actually change the lyrics of a girl-to-boy love song when it's being sung by a gay man. In that instance, the original lyrics should be left as they were.

The song was a love song to a guy, so it would have worked perfectly well for a gay male singer in its original form without any changes. It's the changing of the gender to "heterosexualize" it that always seems so wrong. Especially since they kept the original lyrics when, say, Amelia sang Billie Jean, or one of the male contestants sang If I Were A Boy. The only time they seem to change the genders is when a gay male is singing a love song!

Didn't the same thing happen a couple of years ago, and Dannii got flak for commenting on it?

That was Austin Drage, who apparently actually is straight.

Let's not forget Joe McElderry and Will Young, who both waited until they'd won their respective shows to come out.

And the famous gay cover-up of Series 6. Saying nothing else about that
