But surely that was the OP's whole point....it's the *changing* of the lyrics that s/he objected to. Keeping the song's original gender reference is fine. The problem is when they actually change the lyrics of a girl-to-boy love song when it's being sung by a gay man. In that instance, the original lyrics should be left as they were.
The song was a love song to a guy, so it would have worked perfectly well for a gay male singer in its original form without any changes. It's the changing of the gender to "heterosexualize" it that always seems so wrong. Especially since they kept the original lyrics when, say, Amelia sang Billie Jean, or one of the male contestants sang If I Were A Boy. The only time they seem to change the genders is when a gay male is singing a love song!
Didn't the same thing happen a couple of years ago, and Dannii got flak for commenting on it?
