As far as I remember, Marcus sang the lyrics as they are. That's quite different to changing the lyrics as Craig blatantly did this week.

The criticism is for whoever decided it was 'more appropriate' to change the lyrics.

It was made worse by the fact that the original lyric was changed which meant a conscious effort to change the gender despite Craig's sexual preference was made. This is why I liked Johnny; although he may have been a bit too forward for some people, nobody manifests the term 'gaylord' better than Johnny. He would have rocked 'Born This Way' (which is actually a gay anthem but Mischa cut that part and just sung the chorus).

Im not sure what the controversy is

When I listen to the lyrics its not a love song about a boy or a girl. Its about the love of and obsession with fame and celebrity and also the way "celebrities" court the paparazzi for their own needs but simultaneously claim to hate them. Or at the very least that has always been my understanding of that particular song.
It just assumed Craig was thinking about Lady Ga Ga when he was singing and in my mind the lyric change when taken in context of the lyrics and who they were paying tribute to made complete sense.

Aiden is straight and he kept the gender reference in Diamonds Are Forever last year
"unlike men the diamonds linger..."

On that occasion not changing the song so that it was relevant to his own personal sexuality, worked brilliantly and added a whole other layer to the performance.

To me it is about a singer having the intelligence to understand a songs lyrics beyond the superficial level.
Craig clearly like Aiden is one of the few who does.

I agree - they shouldn't be given songs that can't be easily changed to the appropriate reference. Others have mentioned about Amelia and Billie Jean, which was completely unsuitable for her to sing.

One of the worst ones I can recall was on American Idol and Chrystal Bowersox sang Paul McCartney's song 'Maybe I'm Amazed' - and she stood there shouting 'maybe I'm a man, maybe I'm a lonely man'. It was ludicrous. Why not give her a woman's song? There are thousands of songs out there to pick from.

hahahahaha I agree.

Missed his performance but if the original lyrics had girl, oh well who cares. But if not then yeah, bit silly imo.

Amelia's song was just ridiculous for her, poor girl - "Mama always told me be careful who you love, don't go around braking young girls' hearts", "Billie Jean is not my lover, she's just a girl who claims that I am the one but the kid is not my son" ......... seriously?
.”

Why was Janet's song pathetic? Rihanna sang Te Amo and she isn't gay/bi (at leas she is out). As for Amelia singing Billie Jean, I'll admit that one was a bit strange because biologically no woman is going to have to worry about some random bint showing up saying they have knocked them up. It's hardly the same as Janet singing a daft love to a girl.
