EASTENDERS star Jill Halfpenny has been axed from the soap as part of a cull of unpopular characters.

The Geordie, who plays ex-copper Kate Mitchell, was told the news during a meeting with bosses.

"She won't be killed off and the door will be left open for her to return."

I like Jill Halfpenny but really, Kate adds nothing to the show, so writing her out is a good move.

I agree, I wouldn't miss her at all. Even when you read that article and it says that lately Kate has been part of the biggest storylines i.e the Den affair that was a brutal story line! She is not one of the most annoying characters there are worse but I don't think she will be missed at all. I wonder how she will leave?

Still waiting to hear that the Ferreiras have finally been axed. Sorry to see Jill go even though her character has been pretty pointless lately.

Thank goodness. I really like Jill Halfpenny, but the character definitely seems to have run her course.

I knew someone was going to say that Sarge! Had just posted it and realised someone somewhere would come up with the black cab.

I like Kate, but she wasn't going anywhere and I don't think she will be missed. All the dead wood is finally going

Awww poor Ian (noticed there wasn't a "Poor Ian" thread lol ) he's going to miss Kate as she's one of his limited circle of pals. As an aside, always wondered how a policewoman knew so much about manicures.

Kate's been a character in search of a storyline for a long time now (the Den one, although it had an amusing ending, was just nonsense). So I won't miss her either.

Well she's pretty pointles without Phil, she's stopped rowing with Sam, her affair with Den is over, Chrissie beat her up and hacked her hair off and Ian is all loved up with Jane. She's totally isolated from any of the characters in the Square at the moment. She may aswell be written out and possibly brought back when Phil returns./

Maybe her swan song wil be tied up with the Litlle Mo return and the possible rape trial there. It might jsut be too much for her as it reminds her about her mum and she decideds that she has had enough and leaves.
Re: knowing so much about manicures would she have been made to learn all about them before going under cover on the case about Phil? Still even if she did it wouldn't have taught her how to actually run a business would it?

To be quite honest......I wont miss her........she didn't bring anything new to the show expect to be the right hand girl to other men .

And to be quite honest she should of been axed when Phil left!

Kate is a good character but they never gave her any good storylines and I know they tried but the Den and Kate thing was never going to work!
I blame it on the writers!

I often wondered that about Kate, where did she get her expertise of nails as it was an undercover thing wasn't it? Maybe they train them up quick like on Faking It.

That's the only real prob isn't it, she doesn't really have an solid connections in the square, potentially a good character, but nowhere to go.

Like the 'send her back to Wetherfield' idea, would be fun to see Motton's reaction.

Well, she wasn't a bad character, just under-developed and used. I would have concentrated on others first, but she won't be badly missed.

I'll say though, I did really think she was fantastic in the affair with Den which (contrary to popular opinion) I thought was a fantastic storyline.

I've got a gut feeling that only some of the Ferreira's will be axed.

I agree she doesn't really add anything to the show anymore, but surely there are people we would rather see go? Naming no names of course....
