Seeing how singing is just the act of producing sounds with your voice, I would say that she can sing.

If you are not, then surely this is a good basis upon which to base talent. If someone is so out of tune they cannot sing a note near pitch perfect, they cannot sing. And, as I said, Janet scientifically does NOT reach the notes correctly. How is that ignorant? As you are clearly not ignorant, please explain to me.

Yes, you can measure singing notes technically, to a science. NO, you cannot do so with your ears. Your ears are not a scientific instrument. You can be as trained as you like and you will still have the same flaws in perception that us lesser mortals share.

Beyond that, no, technical ability is not always the most important thing by any means. Maybe it's what gets you technical people off, but it's not the sole measure of the charts. For every Adele that does well, there's tons of talented singers not getting anywhere, whilst Madonnas and Britneys have massive careers that people love.

I never claimed to always know when someone is out of tune, but I was always very good at detecting people who sung even slightly out of tune. And I know Janet does all the time. It angers me how people cannot see that. As far as I'm concerned, if you sing so often out of tune and so badly as she does, you cannot sing. Period.

Theres alot more to singing than just hitting a note in what some people would call a "technically acceptable" way. Billie Holiday would have got nowhere if people just focused on the technical side of her voice, people listened with their emotions to her. Im not comparing Janet to Billie Holiday cause they are nothing a like.. but one thing about Janet is that she at least usually makes a very emotional connection with her performances unlike basically everyone else (except Kitty who I find also emotionally connects). Janet has had some terrible song choices thrown her way. I think the X Factor was a terrible mistake for her really. Shes someone who needed to build herself a little career away from the mainstream. Being thrown into X Factor she was always going to get fans of Belters/Screamers saying she can't sing or that shes boring and I find that sad. You can't buy what she has which is heart.

I'm disagreeing with your statement that its a scientific fact she cant sing. I'm not disagreeing that she cant sing in perfect pitch. I'm only a grade 8 musician and i don't have perfect pitch but i still notice that she doesn't hit the notes. However, i still like listening to her. You should stop being self righteous.

She is very weak on the lower notes as she doesn't have the range. She has quite a nice tone though. Plenty of people who are not techically good singers have managed careers staying within their abilities.

Thick (not recognising the difference between "singing" and " singing with perfect pitch") AND arrogant is a combination, I can't tolerate. There are many people who have recognised general learning difficulties who are not by Amy means "lower" than me for that. Some of them have my admiration and respect for how they take on the world to stand up for their rights. They seem to avoid being ridiculous and wouldn't start a thread like this. It also requires no charity on my part to associate with these worthwhile people.

I agree with this. She would sound better doing more folky stuff IMO with simpler arrangements. Unless she can write good songs I can't see her having much of a music career though.

The most important thing in the music biz is having a product to sell and that means good songs. There are loads of good trained singers out there who will never get anywhere because they have no originality and can't write good songs.

It is ridiculous to judge someone has haing a bad nature merely from one thread they start on a forum. If you really do judge someone on that basis, you may possibly be so narrow minded and judgemental that you should be a solicitor.
