Adam is one of a rare breed -- a singer who can actually sing live , even if you don't like him there are not many who can match his range.

Unless you are a female, who technically have voices higher than blokes.

range has nothing to do with how high you can sing .. it's the measure of how many notes you can cover

Yeah but, like you, it's just Roger Taylor's opinion who, in my opinion, is a pretty poor singer himself and a pretty average rock drummer to boot, all IMO though.

... which is what range is, fair play to your man though, his range covers more octaves than most.

yeah ... I tend not to look too much into all the technical stuff and I honestly do appreciate that some people find him screetchy or just plain don't like him ... bu there's no denying he has an impressive range

personally I sometimes wish he would use his lover register more as he has a really nice tone to it and it doesn't have the vibrato which some of his upper register sometimes gets

this is his first ever performance with Queen when they appeared on the AI finals a few years ago

Thanks Diamond.

He really has something special IMO. OK no one I've ever heard can come near to the power and purity and beauty of Freddie's voice, but to my ear Adam L is one of the closest. He hasn't just got power, he's got a stunning range too and a gorgeous tone and he can impart emotion which I love. The only thing I'd change in the 'Show Must' performance is the use of vibrato but then hes not trying to copy Freddie I expect; hes doing his own thing. I totally get hes not everyone's taste but hes sure as hell mine

Please nobody compare him to Freddie Mercury

What a ridiculous thread. Amelia's performance wasn't bad but only because she had just come back into the competition. If she had been there all these weeks and was giving that vocal, it would be shocking. It seemed impressive because of some power but it was Flatville Central.

Adam's vocal and performance was superb but why compare? They're not in competition against each other.

It's interesting that the OP is a Kitty supporter and made a meal out of Brian May's mention on his blog of Kitty doing Who Wants To Live Forever on the first show. Then, lo and behold, Adam fronts Queen at the EMAs. Drat! There barcode88 was thinking Kitty was in with a genuine chance of that. Never mind the fact that it was Craig's voice Brian commented on and his comments on Kitty were about hearing the first few lines and her performance being moving. He was more ebullient about Stacey Solomon FCOL.

The reason for that is when you are belting full out a song like that you can ruin your voice if you don't use vibrato, especially if you have a trained voice like Adam's. These words of wisdom were given to my by my sister who is training to be an opera singer

That's your opinion.

But I wonder whose opinions count more - your opinion OR the opinions of the Grammy Awards committee/DDD Forum/Roger Taylor/Brian May/Slash/Meat Loaf?

yeah Freddie's a one off and to me nobody can match him singing Queen songs ... although I do like George Michael's version of Somebody To Love

like you say Adam wasn't attempting to impersonate Freddie ... his name wasn't announced prior to the EMA performance, nor was he introduced or credited on the broadcast which a lot of people found a bit strange, but apparently he asked that he wasn't name checked so that the performance was about only Queen and not Queen with Adam Lambert and he didn't want to be seen as Freddie's replacement and to just honour him, the song and the band which I thought was a nice touch as there are a lot of artists these days who like things to be just about them

I also thought that he had a bit too much vibrato on the performance but I thought he did a pretty good job

That's not a nice way to speak about the dead.

Seriously though, I'm a big fan of Queen but I never got to see them live, Freddie died weeks after I was born, but my parents and several other "older" people I know who did rate Adam in that league. Sorry if you're not impressed by that performance (something I find difficult to believe if viewed with no bias) but among the uninitiated before Sunday you're in a minority.

ah right that would explain that .. I also heard that his earpiece wasn';t working so he couldn't hear a thing in it which can;t have helped when you were trying to belt out in a huge arena like the Odyssey

You do realise that a lot of the high notes on Queen recordings and live performances attributed to Freddie were actually Roger, don't you?

A vast amount of Adam fans also love Freddie Mercury ... Adam himself names Freddie as one of his idols .. and most of them appreciate that there's only one Freddie

You're not alone.

I don't think there's any less vibrato to his lower register than his upper though, nor would I want there to be. I hate vibratoless voices. What's that all about? That's just shouting and bellowing.

apparently because the vocal cords vibrate more when using vibrato you are less likely to strain them especially on long notes which Adam used lots of in that performance.
