Why choose Sophie over Amelia?

Sophie has a more interesting voice that is more listenable to.

It's not really as simple as 'one act performed better' at all.”

I think you'll find the word is "classic". The song she was given this week wasn't exactly released yesterday was it?

I'l agree that it was wholly inappropriate for her because it speaks of not being a child's father (as was yesterday's due to the mature nature of the lyrics) but the arrangement suited her more than an arrangement closer to the original would have.

YMMV, but I think Billie Jean sounds much more dated than The Show Must Go On, & the arrangement she was given did little to help her connect with the audience.

It has backfired in a way though and makes the makers look stupid and the judges/mentors not needed. I mean her 'unmentored' performance last night was streets ahead of even her nearest rival (Misha) which begs the question - what are the mentors there for? Apart from their own fame-hungry massive egos that is.”

I agree with all of this. How anyone can rationally say it was all planned to allow Amelia back in the contest, when each way you look into it her performance last night makes the show's producers, vocal coaches and mentors incompetent is a mystery to me. This has been as big an own goal as Cheryl Cole getting hired then fired from X-Factor USA.

What people have to remember is that all 4 of the rejects had two days notice to rehearse "The Show Must Go On"; obviously looking at the odds (bar Amelia) only James stood an outside chance of getting enough votes to be asked to perform it last night. But still that Queen song's lyrical content was not the most appropriate for a teenage girl to sing.

Knowing what this week's theme was if Amelia had a say in what song she could perform she surely would have chosen "You & I" as she sung that great at the judges houses, and has performed it live since.
