For nearly a week I have been without a landline(BT).
Initially incoming calls would ring once only. Now all calls go straight to Call Minder.
I can't get a get a dialling tone but my broadband (Sky) is working.Initally I was told the fault was probably outside and wouldn't need to be in attendance.I have now been told the engineer will be here Wednesday am.
I don't have any extensions and the BT socket is an old type with the connection in the centre of the box, I have tried another phone but am getting the same symptoms but BT say it may still be an internal problem and I would be liable for the charge if it is. Any suggestions?
Many thanks in anticipation.

If you have no extension wiring connected, just the master socket then I can't see how it can be an internal problem - even if it is on the back of this socket, that's still BT's responsibility

That's what I thought.

I take it when you tried another phone it was plugged directly into the telephone socket, so the adsl filter and modem/router/sky STB were disconnected ?...there is a slight chance of being charged even if you only have one socket and no extensions and that is if the master socket is damaged in a way deemed not to be fair wear and tear...such as spilling something into the socket, or the socket being in a wet/damp area and the resulting corrosion causing the problem.

Yes, I plugged the other phone in on its own.
Also the phone socket is in a bedroom not now used so I have no reason to move anything around.
I had a similar problem problem a year or so back when the phone would ring once only, but didn't affect outgoing calls.
I think the engineer fixed the problem via a connection box which is fixed to the outside wall, and I think it may have been caused by heavy rain, which we also had here last week.

Sounds like a faulty line card in the exchange to me.

Paddy,
Many thanks Paddy.
I am at work at the moment so don't have my account details at hand, but can send them later.
My landline calls are been diverted to my mobile phone.
Thanks again.
Ray.

Hi Paddy.
The engineer is here now, he said it is an external fault and has now gone to the local exchange to find the problem.
He told my wife the line and equipment are very old and no one wants to climb old poles anymore (there's a joke there some where)
Many thanks for your offer of help, hopefully the problem will be sorted out very soon.
Regards
Ray.
